College Access Mentor, Writing Tutor, and Religious Studies Tutor

Hello! My name is Nina and I am a senior at Nazareth University in Rochester, NY. I have had experience tutoring people of all ages in essay writing since my sophomore year of high school. I have been a head editor of my school's literary magazine. This job required me to check grammar, organization, and sentence structure of essays, poems, prose, and other forms of writing. In my high school and collegiate years, I have had experience tutoring individuals from ages 10-40 years old and have adapted to various learning styles. In college, I am a music therapy student with a minor in interfaith studies, which enables me to write different types of essays regularly. For the last three years, I have been a tutor for my university's writing center. This has allowed me to work with various students of different ages and backgrounds, along with helping people write essays from all subjects (science, math, english, history, etc.). I have skills in compassionate mentorship through my major and I love to bring this into my tutoring. My goal is to help people gain confidence in their writing skills and give them the independence to take into their future academics. As a college student, I have experience with scholarship and college essay writing, academic writing (research, rhetorical analysis, argumentative, biographical, clinical, etc.), and creative writing (fiction, poetry, fantasy, etc.). I hope to provide affordable tutoring for those who cannot always afford the high price it takes to further their writing skills. Since I am in college, I am still learning how to be the best tutor possible, therefore I often charge less than that of a professional price.

"You don't speak Latin?" Latin language tutor and Roman history expert

I have 5 years full time experience teaching Latin language in the classroom and I have state (PA) certification in this field. My classes have represented a wide variety of backgrounds, racially and socio-economically, including several ELL students. My sections in the past have ranged in size from 32 to 5 students. Besides full classes, I worked extensively with tutoring one-on-one in college as well as in high school. I have led sections ranging from a complete introduction to the language, to reading classes working on college level texts. In the latter, the students read through passages from Ovid, Martial, Catullus & Caesar, as well as collaborating in groups on technical compositions. With my Introductory level classes, I balanced the Reading and Comprehensible Input methods with the more traditional Grammar Focused method and I often incorporated group work into the lesson. In addition to whichever textbook the school provided, I would add supplemental units of my own between chapters in order to address certain grammatical topics or a themed vocabulary unit. Besides the language itself, I have a passion for studying the history of Rome and the ancient world in general. I would incorporate these topics into the classroom often, because studying the Roman world and culture brings the language to life for students and allows for a more interdisciplinary mindset. With each group of students, I go the extra mile to accurately monitor their progress in the language so that I can adjust the instruction as necessary. That way, I can best address their needs and continue to encourage them positively.

English Made Easy!

I am a special education teacher for over 20 years. I have spent the majority of my time working with struggling readers and writers. I have worked with severely dyslexic children, gifted children and everything in between. I have taught every age level from 3 to 18. I thoroughly enjoy lifting these children up and seeing the joy on their faces as they discover new worlds through reading and writing. I currently work in a learning center with high school girls/young ladies. It is wonderful and very rewarding, especially after Covid, when most children fell behind. I have also working in public and private schools in varies states. I found both to be rewarding, and yet the private schools that focused specifically on students with reading challenges were my favorite. I learned SO much from fellow teachers and tons of professional development they provided us on a regular basis. I have tutored so many students over the years I have most certainly lost count. I feel very grateful to be able to relieve the stress that often affects families due to students who struggle with homework and assignments. The families are always so grateful. I have worked at a specialized school for most of my summers that is for students with severe reading issues and need to go to ESY. I never tire of teaching the English language and all of it's challenging nuances. Making it fun and enjoyable has always been a gift of mine and has lead to my successful tutoring career over the years.
