Academic Writing is a core skill in communication and the basis of most university programs. It is an exercise in critical thinking, clarity of expression, and logical reasoning, and it is a passion of mine to help students to develop these skills.
During my 23 years of full-time teaching, I have taught academic writing skills to thousands of students. While a great deal of my experience in teaching academic writing stems from my years as an AP and IB MYP/DP teacher, every class I taught was a reading and writing intensive class regardless of the subject matter and the level of the students. I have taught academic writing in the most rigorous of courses offered as well as in courses dominated by ELL and ESL students who were recent immigrants to the United States or who live in Ecuador, where I spent 5 years teaching. All students can learn to be effective writers.
My expertise in teaching academic writing spans the gamut. I have years of experience teaching students from a wide variety of backgrounds how to write expository essays including: compare and contrast/comparative essays, change and continuity over time essays, point-counterpoint essays, Internal Assessments, Extended Essays, and basic argumentative and persuasive essays, among others. At the heart of all of these types of academic writing are clarity and precision in the use of language, conciseness, logical reasoning, and, of course, citation. Development of these skills is my expertise.
