Shelby PeresRochester, NYMS Microbiology, Biology Tutor
I have always had a fascination for learning about life - big and small. I have studied biology and microbiology for the last six years, earning my BA in Biology at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL (2020) and my MS in Microbiology from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY (2023).
I was published as the first author in CourseSource, (Peres et al, 2019) investigating the best ways to teach a biochemistry lab at the 100 and 300 levels. I presented my work at the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2019.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked as the Laboratory Operations Associate at Experience Anatomy, LLC in Charlotte, NC. One of the tenants of my job was to post short yet educational content on social media, to reach a broad and often novice audience. I often helped construct and run anatomy courses for learners of all ages – from six-year-olds to surgical residents.
As a graduate student, I investigated the peptidoglycan layer of mycobacteria, the genus of bacteria that causes Tuberculosis. I defended my thesis to the whole department, simplifying the overwhelming amount of information into easily digestible segments. Throughout my time, I streamlined protocols and reran experiments to yield effective and efficient methods for future scientists in the laboratory.
