News Director, Professional Writing Mentor

I have years of professional experience in teaching Journalism. I have served as a News Director for two years, working as an editor-in-chief. I proofread articles daily and am constantly immersed in new content and trends. I am highly proficient in AP Style and proper grammar for Journalism writing. In college, I was a tutor at our Learning Resource Center on campus. I focused on helping my peers in essay wring, grammar, and technical writing. I tutored college level students for two years while I attended Flagler College. It was also there that I earned my degree in Journalism and Media Production with a concentration in Journalism. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with the Distinguished Journalism Student award, presented to the top journalism student. I was also awarded the Faculty Department Award from Flagler College which is presented to graduating seniors who "have distinguished themselves through scholarly activity and academic achievement in their selected disciplines of study." Since graduating, I have volunteered tutoring grades k-12 for three years and have continued to help my college level peers in reviewing their work. I have helped recent graduates secure jobs by helping them compose resumes and proofreading their work. I am passionate about writing and I enjoy teaching because I have found that most students already have the answers, they just need help getting their thoughts organized on paper. I can provide the tools to help you reach your fullest potential. In our sessions, I will work with you and cater to your learning habits to give our time a meaningful and lasting learning experience.

Ben Fagan
Lake Worth, FL

Adjunct professor | Public speaker | Author | Former college athlete

I developed a strong passion for writing when I was studying journalism in school. That passion has allowed me to be a contributing writer for local newspapers and magazines, publish a book, and, most excitingly, pass along my passion to new students as an adjunct professor and tutor. For the past five years, through my work as an adjunct professor, college career coach and tutor, I have had the great privilege to work with, speak with and mentor countless high school and college students as they pursue further education and begin their professional careers. Being in roles like these, I cannot help but reflect on all of the people who have helped me and continue to help me throughout my educational and professional journeys. To be able to give back to students, just as so many gave back to me as I was growing up, is what excites me most about this opportunity. With my background in journalism, I have extended experience with producing and editing a variety of writing styles and topics. Through my training, both in school and professionally, I have developed detail-oriented habits that allow me to write efficiently and effectively. As an adjunct professor, I teach journalism classes, both online and in-person. In the courses I teach, such as photojournalism and newspaper writing, proofreading is an emphasized component. I strive to help my students build a strong foundation of writing and editing principles so they can produce high-quality writing on their own. In my role as a career coach, I work with high school and college students on their resumes, cover letters, personal statements and other writing requirements for college and career applications. While these writing styles vary from journalistic writing, many of the same principles apply. I take the same approach with my career coaching students as I do with my journalism students. Ultimately, my goal is to help them feel confident in their abilities as independent writers and scholars.

David Cutler

Veteran Educator in American History, Journalism, and Essay Writing

In the world of journalism, the need to foster and hone new talent has never been greater. It's one thing to teach the basics of journalistic writing, but quite another to shape young minds into award-winning journalists. As the adviser for The Gator, which can be accessed at https://bmgator.org/, I have had the profound privilege of doing precisely that. The Gator is not just a student newspaper; it's a laboratory of journalistic excellence. Under my guidance, it has morphed into a platform where students not only refine their writing skills, but also test their mettle in real-world journalistic scenarios. Their consistent dedication to producing impactful and insightful stories has been recognized on national platforms, leading The Gator to earn numerous accolades and distinctions. The core of my teaching philosophy lies in helping people find and polish their unique voices. Through The Gator, students learn to approach stories with a blend of curiosity and responsibility, while also internalizing the tenets of journalistic integrity. These lessons have resulted in our students distinguishing themselves as some of the nation's most promising and accomplished student journalists. While I am deeply committed to nurturing budding talent, I also continue to contribute to the journalistic field. My own reporting, reflecting a blend of seasoned experience and fresh insights, is available at https://dcutler.pressfolios.com/. This personal involvement ensures I stay attuned to the ever-changing demands and nuances of the industry, enriching my teachings with current, real-world examples.
