I have an excellent education as I majored in English and minored in Social Work for my bachelor’s I received from the University of Texas at Austin. When I was in college, I made sure to take a wide variety of English courses to be able to interpret a wide variety of texts. I took two poetry courses, a world literature course that was particularly comprised of plays, and a global short story course. My upper division GPA upon graduation was a 3.75 which I am proud of. I learned many teaching skills during my college experience. I took “Literature studies for English Teachers”. I learned how to craft lesson plans and how to teach within each student’s zone of proximal development. I also learned about the common obstacles students may have to success, as well as strategies to combat those obstacles. In addition to that class, I have taken an adolescent development class in which I learned the stages of teen and young adult development. I learned what times in the life cycle types of learning are possible. I believe my Social Work background has helped me develop patience and very good listening skills. It might also be worth mentioning that I have a couple months tutoring experience with a friend’s nephew who ended up earning the highest grade in his class. So, I have experience tutoring a teen. Basic skills I possess are essay writing, research paper writing, text research/analyses, how to develop good study habits, help with grammar and sentence structure, and CRIT skills (close reading interpretive tools).

Middle School English provides an important foundation for student success in their academic career. Increasing comprehension of grammar and semantics, as well as improving listening and speaking, are valuable aspects of communication that are built upon in Middle School English. These foundational skills also led to my favorite parts of tutoring this subject: reading and writing. Exploring different forms of literature and helping students discover a lifelong love for reading is a joy. Helping students in this way was a great experience for me while working with Varsity Tutors and Paper Tutoring. Discovering each student's unique interests and abilities helped to form the basis of our learning plans. By adapting to each individual's learning style, I was able to develop successful tutoring relationships with my students. I also encouraged creativity and self-expression by expanding my students writing skills. By improving the skills formed in Middle School English, such as reading, writing, analysis, and critical thinking, students are given valuable preparation for higher learning. High School students are often preparing for college, and English is a subject that will benefit them in their continuing academic success. Being able to analyze diverse forms of literature and communicate that analysis as an essay or research paper can sometimes be a challenge. As a college student, I can relate to the stress and pressure faced by today's students. Although it can be stressful, this is a great time to not only refine reading and writing skills but also to further develop tastes in literature, creative voice, and skills such as critical thinking, active reading, study skills, and test prep. Encouraging creativity through writing and sharing my love for reading were two ways I was successful tutoring High School English through the Paper Tutoring chat platform and the remote one on one Varsity Tutors platform.

Oxford Graduate. English. Language Arts and CELTA - English as a second language. ESL

I have been teaching for over 30 years in total and I have been teaching English Online now for over four years with a great deal of success. I have happy students who are moving towards their goals and growing in confidence. I am married to an Italian, so I am a language learner myself and I completely understand the challenges faced when trying to learn a new language. I was born and raised in England where I became a Primary School Teacher (teaching children aged 7-11) Later, I became a teacher at an International School in Norway where the children came from all over the World, spoke many different languages and needed support with their English. Subsequently, I studied for and passed the CELTA qualification. This then allowed me to teach English as a Second Language to both adults and children. In addition to this to this, I completed a course (with Future Learn) which enabled me to adapt my teaching skills to teaching online. I believe it's important for my students to feel motivated and engaged, so, whatever your ability or needs, I will listen to you in order to gauge a starting point for you. I am interested in your interests and like to build lessons around your goals using a variety of resources in order to make lessons lively and interesting. I will provide homework activities, using different media so that you can then go on to practise and reinforce what you have learned. I will always provide feedback for this. I currently live in the U.S. and, when I'm not teaching online, I am a substitute teacher at a local school in order to keep up-to-date with developments in Education.
