Math, English, Linguistics Help! - University of Pittsburgh Student, Professional Tutor

For the past year and a half, I've worked as a general subject tutor for the Pittsburgh Promise Extension Into Scholar Initiative at CCAC. In this position, I have helped students extensively to improve their English skills, primarily through analyzing and critiquing their essay writing. English, however, is not only worthwhile to learn about just for writing essays. It's a lingua franca throughout much of the world. Proficiency in English is extraordinarily empowering for those who do not speak it natively. While it's important to have a grasp of the grammar and vocabulary necessary for formal writing, it is equally important to understand informal speech to better be able to communicate with native speakers. I offer my experience to native and non-native English speakers alike. As a Linguistics student, I understand the difficulties that can arise for people of any proficiency level, and I want to provide a judgement-free environment to help you overcome those difficulties. Language is a passion of mine and making use of my English experience to teach others is my biggest goal in life. From straight A's in my English classes throughout high school to achieving straight A's in my English and Public Speaking classes in college, and all the way to being a professional English tutor today, I am prepared to provide the best help to you that I can!

English Tutor

As a child of an English teacher, I was raised reading and writing at levels above the expectation for my age/grade. Furthermore, I have had a multitude of experiences that have led to an adaptation to my learning, as well as teaching, style. It is important to note that these experiences have been on a one to one basis and have been tutor-styled. I once assisted a kindergartener get through her online schooling during the pandemic for two months. By the end of our two months together, the student and I not only formed a wonderful connection, but she was also reading at a third grade level, and writing at a first grade level. In just two months, I had a new best friend who could not wait to read the Harry Potter series. Moreover, my college experience has been based around my ability to read and write about complicated and specific sociological concepts. My professors over the past four years have assisted me in adjusting my writing style and voice to fit the sociology APA formatting that has allowed me to begin a dissertation that I one day hope to publish. Overall, I have been extremely successful in gaining high marks in my English classes and continue to have a genuine passion for my growing understanding. I also have a passion for assisting others to succeed and exponentially grow in their English abilities. I have always been the friend who reads everyone's papers before submission, and enjoy the moment of excitement in others when they utilize my constructive criticisms and receive a high grade!
