PhD Student in Classical Studies

I have a Bachelor's degree in Classical Languages from the University of Iowa and a Master's degree in Classical Studies (Latin track) from Indiana University. In the fall, I will be continuing my studies in pursuit of a PhD at a different institution, although I have not made the choice yet. At Indiana University, I was the instructor of record for four semesters of language instruction. I have had the opportunity to work with both undergraduate and graduate students. As the instructor of small classes, I have worked regularly one-on-one with my students. During my undergrad, I worked as the department Greek tutor. Also, I volunteered one school year (2018-2019) at Iowa City High School, teaching Latin. Otherwise, I have made a study of both Greek and Latin for about eight years. I have taken seven and a half years of Greek/Latin classes, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. As part of my graduate instruction, I worked as an assistant instructor for three semesters: Ancient Greek Culture (FA20, SP21), Classical Mythology (SP20). I was responsible for leading the discussion sections for these classes. In discussion section, we reviewed points of scholarly interest in translated Greek texts. We formulated hypotheses concerning these points of interest, and developed arguments in support or refutation. I worked with students on developing their papers for these classes, and I was responsible for grading all of the essays. I have written numerous A papers, and a couple A+ papers, for graduate seminars. Recently, one of these papers served me successfully, as a writing sample in an application to a high-ranking PhD program in Classical Studies. I understand the standards of academic writing in the humanities, and the expectations of instructors for graduate and undergraduate students.

Former College Instructor and Current English and Writing Teacher/Tutor

I have over 4 years of experience tutoring writing and English-related subjects. I graduated from Rosemont college with a B.A. in English literature and writing and spent some time in a creative writing M.F.A. program before finishing my M.A. in English at the University of North Dakota. I have spent two years teaching freshmen composition courses and this will be my second year teaching AP English Language and Composition. In high school, I was an honors student at the top of my class and received all A's in my English classes while taking many extracurriculars. I have since gone on to explore the many fields of English beyond literature to technical writing, journalism, debate, proposal writing, genre-specific studies, and more. With the burgeoning fields of technological careers, my interests have shifted towards optimizing English and language skills for students based on their wants, needs, and especially their bright futures. Working as a teacher both in-person and online has given me experience and skills with both. I have curated materials for teaching and tested methods with a variety of students with diverse needs and learning styles. I've worked with demographics of high-achieving students, international students, and students with disabilities as well so I recognize some of the unique challenges students face and need with extra tutoring. Ultimately, my goal is to make student's independent learners and confident in their English skills.
