PhD Student in Classical Studies

I have a Bachelor's degree in Classical Languages from the University of Iowa and a Master's degree in Classical Studies (Latin track) from Indiana University. In the fall, I will be continuing my studies in pursuit of a PhD at a different institution, although I have not made the choice yet. At Indiana University, I was the instructor of record for four semesters of language instruction. I have had the opportunity to work with both undergraduate and graduate students. As the instructor of small classes, I have worked regularly one-on-one with my students. During my undergrad, I worked as the department Greek tutor. Also, I volunteered one school year (2018-2019) at Iowa City High School, teaching Latin. Otherwise, I have made a study of both Greek and Latin for about eight years. I have taken seven and a half years of Greek/Latin classes, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. As part of my graduate instruction, I worked as an assistant instructor for three semesters: Ancient Greek Culture (FA20, SP21), Classical Mythology (SP20). I was responsible for leading the discussion sections for these classes. In discussion section, we reviewed points of scholarly interest in translated Greek texts. We formulated hypotheses concerning these points of interest, and developed arguments in support or refutation. I worked with students on developing their papers for these classes, and I was responsible for grading all of the essays. I have written numerous A papers, and a couple A+ papers, for graduate seminars. Recently, one of these papers served me successfully, as a writing sample in an application to a high-ranking PhD program in Classical Studies. I understand the standards of academic writing in the humanities, and the expectations of instructors for graduate and undergraduate students.

TESOL-Certified Native English Speaker Teacher

Growing up as an avid reader and passionate creative writer, English has always been one of my strongest subjects. I received a 5 on the AP English Language and Composition exam and currently, I write for my college student newspaper. I started teaching English as a virtual volunteer tutor for various non-profit organizations such as the Latino Student Fund, ENGin, and JuniorCoachGolf. These initial experiences allowed me to work with students of various cultures and language proficiencies, and I look forward to interacting with individuals of all different backgrounds. Since then, I have gained more professional teaching experiences, through paid English tutoring, as well as in-person classroom teaching. In May 2023, I earned the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification credential from Harper College. In all of my lessons, my top priority is helping students become more confident using English, focusing on conversational English. More specifically, I will prioritize teaching English that students can use on the street or in their day-to-day lives. Of course, this will be dependent on the goals of the learners and the values of the school institution, but it is my view that language is the most useful when it can be applied to real-life situations. Lastly, I understand firsthand how difficult learning another language can be. I took Spanish throughout my schooling for six years and I still am not fluent — so I empathize with being in environments where others are speaking an unfamiliar language. For this reason, I consider myself a patient and empathetic individual and educator. It is vital for me to build connections with my students for an engaging and informative learning experience.
