Grace LeeBerkeley, CARecent UC Berkeley Graduate, English Tutor
I have fostered my lifelong passion for and knowledge of the English language and Anglophone literature at the University of California, Berkeley. After writing numerous essays and analyzing various literary works, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a 3.98 GPA. Aside from my major-related coursework, I edited poetry as an associate editor for the Berkeley Poetry Review and the student-run journal, To An Unknown God.
I have further applied my expertise in the subject of English by tutoring different age groups of diverse backgrounds. With the company Ringle Inc., I taught English to non-native speakers—from elementary-school students to those in college and even working professionals—according to their individual skill levels and learning styles. At the YMCA in Downtown Berkeley, I helped high schoolers write, revise, and edit their personal statements (known as "personal insight questions") for admissions to campuses in the University of California university system.
By studying the written word, people learn how to express themselves more accurately, comprehensibly, and richly. This skill can build their confidence and sense of power, as they come to understand better themselves and others in the medium of language. I want to help students experience such meaning and significance in the works they read and the writing they produce, as I have, in my own work involving the English language.
