Jamal Russell
Santa Barbara, CA

PhD Candidate; English Tutor

I have taught English at the collegiate level for over 9 years, and have taught across subjects and areas of emphasis. My courses often integrated approaches to the close reading of literary texts with the instruction of composition and rhetoric. Through this, I was able to effectively teach my students not only how to examine important literary works in detail, but also how to effectively articulate their thoughts on said material. I have taught a number of courses in 20th and 21st Century American and Anglophone literature using these methods to great success in the classroom. I myself was an exceptional English student at every level of schooling, which ultimately resulted in me pursuing an English PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Even when I was not primarily pursuing English studies, I was still a passionate student of the subject, which informed my interest in international law while a Political Student at The Ohio State University and eventually resulted in me transitioning to English studies at Wright State University. These experiences provide me with an important perspective on how the tools of English study can apply to contexts beyond those of the discipline, which my students have found extremely valuable both in the classroom and beyond it. I have also worked at a music writer at points throughout my career, providing me with real-world experience regarding the application of the techniques of English study. In particular, the many hours I have spent editing my articles and those of others as a writer allow me to provide valuable practical advice for any student who wants to become a better writer.

Anusha Gogulapati
Bakersfield, CA

UCLA Graduate, UC Davis Medical Student

I have been passionate about English for a long time. Through elementary and middle school, I enrolled in writing competitions, wrote short stories, and worked on my speaking skills through Oral Language. In high school, I earned A's in all of my English classes. I also scored 5's on my Advanced Placement English Language and Literature exams. I further developed my love of the subject by participating in speech and debate competitions, where I competed with material I had written spanning a multitude of subjects like legislative policy, healthcare, and the environment. I also began tutoring extensively the end of my high school career. I helped students through their writing courses, freshman and sophomore English classes, and even began editing essays for College applications. Spending hours going through course material, explaining grammatical concepts, and helping people restructure their writing has helped me develop my own English skills. I have built upon these experiences in college at UCLA, tutoring Elementary and Middle School students around the Los Angeles area. I have helped dozens of students learn to read, spell, and develop their vocabulary according to their current proficiency, and I have learnt how to adjust my teaching style in order to aid how they learn best. My ultimate goal is to make learning English fun because at the end of the day, words can be powerful depending on how we use them!

Vivian Chernabaeff

English Grammar, Reading, & Essay Writing Expert

I have been writing exemplary essays ever since elementary school. Over the course of the entirety of my school career (from elementary school to university), I was highly praised for my ability to write at a much higher level than my fellow students. I have extensive experience writing essays and papers for every subject (and in many different writing formats, including MLA, AP, APA, and ASA), especially in-depth research papers. Even the essays that I believed were sub-par never scored below an A-. In more courses that I can count, I received the highest grade out of all the other students in the class. While I was a broke college student, I began to supplement my non-existing income by editing/proofreading and ghostwriting papers for other college students. The only criticism I ever received was that I wrote at a level that was deemed "too advanced." Eventually, I experienced a morality crisis due to the fact that I earned someone their master's degree by entirely composing their thesis myself. After this, I had to stop ghostwriting essays. Toward the end of university, I was hired as a senior editor for a small publishing company where I edited manuscripts and constructed literary reviews, contracts, and written legal documents. Ever since I graduated from university, I have greatly missed writing papers, and I often wish I could have remained in college forever so that I could continue to do what I did best, i.e., write essays.
