College Application and Essay Consultant

As a college professor, I have inside knowledge of how universities work, what competitive universities look for in the students they admit, and how to boost holistic student success. I became interested in college admissions when my son was a senior in high school. As I helped him research his options and increase his chances of admission into highly selective universities, I realized that there is a daunting amount of information that most students and parents don’t have. I took it upon myself to become an expert in multiple aspects of the college admissions process, including: • Building a holistic extracurricular profile • Navigating AP and dual-enrollment credit • Selecting appropriate reach, target, and safety schools • Developing a compelling Common App essay • Writing and organizing strong supplemental essays • Navigating early decision, early action, and regular decision deadlines • SAT and ACT testing, including when to apply test-optional • Differences between the Common App, Coalition App, and University of California App • Financial Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS (College Board) Profile I am enthusiastic about passing along the knowledge and experience I have gained to other students and their families! I can offer comprehensive college admissions consulting or provide targeted assistance in any of these areas. As the author of six published books and dozens of published essays, I can also offer expert writing advice to help students create college essays that get them noticed.

Critically-acclaimed memoirist teaching students to write their stories

Writing a college admissions essay can be stressful and really frustrating. There’s a lot of pressure to make it perfect! Ugh, there’s nothing worse than that feeling for a writer. My job as a tutor is twofold: one, to make the process easier and more enjoyable, and two, to give students writing skills that will help with all the essays and papers still to come in college. The best way to do this, I find, is to break the writing process down into small steps. First, we'll talk. I'll prompt you to open up about your life experiences, what you have to offer prospective schools and future classmates, and what you hope to gain from the college experience. From there we'll start to do some free and easy writing. This will just be low stakes sprinting, i.e. writing as fast as you can to a prompt, usually with a five or ten minute timer set. The sprints will start to loosen up your writing mind and give us some words to work with. Once you start to build a pile of words we’ll be able to recognize what it is exactly you want to say. From there we can identify parts that could serve as your essay's beginning, middle and end. Once we have that basic shape in place we can start to revise. In other words we'll read your draft over several times with an eye for making each sentence as clear as possible. Let me say it again: my job here has two parts. One is to make writing the college admissions essay as fun and stress-free as possible, the other is to help you learn to write the kind of effective essay you’ll be producing over the next four years of college and beyond. I look forward to writing with you!

Harvard University Graduate, Biological Student Researcher

I have studied Biology at Harvard University for the past 4 years, and I just graduated this past May. I have gathered an extensive knowledge base regarding college admissions and college admissions essay writing as well, both during my time as an applicant and after speaking with various college admissions officers. During my application cycle, I was accepted into several high-tier colleges including Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Northwestern. During my time at Harvard, I tutored highschool students in biology and Pre-Med topics as a tutor through The Harvard Academies. I also recieved several awards and honors, including a grant from the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology to conduct research, a grading of "Excellent" on my senior thesis, and Highest Honors within my major. I offer tutoring services in general college applications and college essay writing, where I will help students craft unique and individualized narratives appealing to college admissions officers, capture the best aspects of their growth through their highschool careers, understand what admissions officers are looking for, and edit their essays to best capture their individual voices. I have experience in lesson planning and instructing through my time as a Harvard Academies tutor and as a National Honor Society tutor in highschool. My experience in essay writing stems from the rigorous applications which I completed and gained admission with during my college admissions process. I have informally helped dozens of highschoolers with their essays during my time at college and have recieved various recommendations to other students. I also have experience in grant application and research, and have recieved a total of $7000 in research grants during my time at college. My diverse experiences combined with a strong foundation in student tutoring mean lessons will be clear, helpful, and based on an extensive knowledge of application essay writing and college admissions in general.
