Creative Songwriting Screenwriter & Guitar-playing Pianist with The Muse on stand-by

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University's prestigious Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Program in Film and Media Studies, I taught myself to write songs while earning a degree focused in screenwriting and other forms of creative writing. In the ensuing twenty years I have written hundreds of songs on my own and collaborated on hundreds more, many published and released on various independent labels, along with myriad experiences in screenwriting, poetry, prose, direction, videography, musical performance, production and studio session work. I now teach guitar, piano and songwriting at a music company in Nashville and am developing my own songwriting and production business called SongCycle. Current freelance projects include a book-to-film screenplay adaptation for a noted Atlanta production company and upcoming musical releases. My extensive experience includes charting albums of my own composition, a produced screenplay, a Film Composer credit, videography work with Lucinda Williams, Brandi Carlile, Steve Earle and much more. Whether acting as songwriter, screenwriter, prose writer, poet, director, videographer, editor or tutor, it is a writer's overall aesthetic sensibility that permeates, with special attention paid to story structure, framing, syntax, linguistic reference, poetic metaphor, editing, character development and world-building.

Brett Chosewood
Alto, GA

Teacher, Tutor, Lifelong Learner

Hello! My name is Brett Chosewood, and I am an English and Language Arts teacher from Georgia in the United States. I have taught both locally and abroad (in countries such as China, Dubai, and Mexico) for over twelve years. In addition, I also have extensive experience in writing, editing, and communication. My education includes a Bachelor’s in English and a Master’s in English Education (Teaching), both obtained from Piedmont College. I am also currently pursuing a PhD in English Composition from Old Dominion University. I love teaching and tutoring because I get to work with students to meet their individual needs. Each student is unique, and I truly love helping my students achieve their goals. I want to be a valuable resource in the lives of those I help, using my experience as a student and as a teacher. Nothing makes me feel prouder than seeing my students succeed. They teach me as much as I teach them. My style of teaching involves building a strong rapport with my students, determining their individual needs, and tailoring my sessions with them to meet those needs. I try to get feedback from and assess students regularly to ensure they are understanding lesson concepts and progressing appropriately. My greatest accomplishment was developing the entire English curriculum for a high school in Sichuan, China. I taught there for a year, and when I began my job, there was no curriculum. I assessed the needs of the students, developed the curriculum for ESL and Literature, and set appropriate bench parts. The result was that all students saw a significant increase in their TOEFL scores. My desire is to bring the same effort and success to your students!

Experienced writer, always excited to share my passion for writing with others!

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing from Purchase College SUNY, and I have 3 years of experience in copywriting, editing, and online publishing. I am skilled in writing for creative, academic, and professional contexts, and eager to use my skills to train other people in them as well. My coursework for my Bachelor's required deep understanding of writing and editing. I produced my own written work within submission deadlines, and I wrote in-depth analysis and critiques of other people's work as well. As part of my coursework, I produced multiple short-stories and novellas which earned me a 3.8 GPA when I graduated. My written fiction has been published in Italics Mine Magazine, and I have written an audio-play script for Headfone. I have also self-published book reviews via Medium and been trained in SEO (search engine optimization) techniques, which I have incorporated into all of my web-published work. I have worked as a copy-editor for the literary magazine Submissions Magazine. With them, I looked over all submitted works, produced reader's reports and edits, and contacted the authors to provide feedback on their work. I was also a Lead Content Writer for a career coaching company, where I was able to hone my skills for professional writing and editing, and where I was trained in SEO techniques and web publication. Writing has always been my passion, and I am always excited for the chance to teach and inspire others. Whether for academic contexts or creative endeavors, writing is a vital tool that I am excited to share.

Your Favorite Reading and Writing Mentor

I have a degree in Secondary Education as well as English Language Arts. With these degrees I was a High School English Language arts teacher for 5 years. I have always been an avid reader and writer and found it such a privilege to share that love and knowledge with my students. I am no longer a part of the public education system, however, that love and desire to impact students is still my purpose and my passion. When I was in Middle School and High School I was conflicted between loving reading and writing when I was at home, yet, deeply disliking my ELA classes. Seriously...it was my least favorite subject but one of my favorite hobbies. In school ELA seemed so boring and completely irrelevant to my daily life or, honestly the world in general. Yet, when I read for myself, I was transported into the worlds that the authors created. I felt as if, for a brief moment, I was living another life. Then in the times when my head felt too full and I needed to vent, but not to a person, I wrote, and it gave me such a feeling of power and release. I was so confused how I could dislike something so much in school when I loved it so much personally. When I became a teacher, I realized the answer. Reading and writing are such a personal thing yet, they are often taught as if they aren't. Often students are given instructions such as, "read quietly" or "write a 5-sentence response"... with no reason. Where is the exploration in that? Where is the self-expression? Often times students need a different approach than what you typically see to thrive in their reading and writing skills. They need one-on-one attention and someone who will explore the beauty and true power of the written and spoken word. That is my goal, to offer a different approach and help my students reach their full potential. Learning should be fun; growth should happen naturally through exploration and understand. You'd be shocked at the incredible results this approach yields.

Passionate Writer and Editor Eager to Teach :)

Writing has been my favorite thing to do for as long as I can remember. To date, I have completed my own poetry collection, and I am halfway through my first novel. Not to mention a variety of short stories, book outlines, and research papers. I have been writing for ten years now! I recently began teaching writing, as I have a deep passion for sharing the beauty of words with others. I am in the last semester of my Masters in English studies. I obtain an undergraduate degree in English Writing and Publication. I also hold a teaching English as a foreign language certificate, and I am comfortable with teaching language learners and second language speakers. I have taught writing at various levels and to a variety of audiences. My experience started with a supplemental instructor position, and since then, I have taught in one on one settings and group settings. A bulk of my experience is with neurodivergent students, including but not limited to dyslexia, dysgraphia, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, and ADHD. I help a variety of students with the college essay process each year, and I have had students enroll at prestigious universities such as Georgia Tech, New York University, and Emory University. Some of my favorite styles to teach are creative writing (poetry, short stories, and novels), technical writing, and essay writing. I look forward to working together!
