Ernest Valdes

Math Tutor, K-12, Experienced Tutor, Veteran, Senior Engineer.

ERNEST VALDES, MSEE, MBA BIO SHORT SUMMARY (AND APPROACH TO TEACHING) My name is Ernest, and I am a "retired" Military Veteran and former Navy Officer; and a former Engineering Director of an Aerospace company. I hold Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees in Electrical Engineering (BSEE, MSEE), and an MBA degree. I have 8+ years of teaching and tutoring experience, (4+ years remote teaching/tutoring) at K-12 levels. My current focus is on Middle School (Math and Science) and High School (Math). I am currently teaching and tutoring for a non-profit organization that focuses on helping inner-city underprivileged high school students with their Math courses. *** Below is my list of "Ready-Now" courses that I can support (Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 6 PM) (Pacific Time)...My list of courses I can teach and/or tutor are: 1. Middle School Math (All grades, all math subjects) 2. Middle School General Science 3. Middle School Pre-Algebra 4. High School (HS) Pre-Algebra 5. HS Algebra 1 & 2 6. HS Geometry 7. HS Statistics 8. HS Business Math Course (This course combines Math/Algebra with Business Topics and Economics) 9. HS Introduction to the STEM Profession and Engineering Principles (Classes or Seminars) *** I am very effective at helping and teaching young kids "How to enjoy Math," and "Not to be afraid of Math." My approach to tutoring is to ensure I understand "What the student needs," and "What the parents want and need," -- in order for me to help the student improve their Math grades in school. I tailor all my lessons for each student, such as 1-1 sessions or small student-group sessions. For some students, I accelerate the lessons planned, and keep the student challenged. For others, I slow down, take very small incremental steps, and show an extra dose of patience.

Experienced and Passionate English/Writing Skills Tutor

I have about 3 years of experience teaching English as a foreign language and over 5 years of tutoring English, particularly writing skills. I have worked abroad in Ecuador and India as an English teacher, community developer, and cross-cultural ambassador with two non-profits. My most noteworthy position was serving as an education volunteer in Ethiopia through the Peace Corps, where I also earned a valid TEFL certification. These positions included mostly conventional classroom teaching, but I also worked with countless students of all ages and walks of life, including special needs students. As an English teacher and tutor, I aim to make challenging subject matter, particularly grammar concepts and fundamentals, easier for my students. Thus, my approach and methodology are very personable, laid-back, and collaborative. I find this best helps to ensure that my students don't dread learning and feel genuinely confident they can develop and employ a better command of the English language. Working as a tutor and ever-aspiring educator imbues me with gratification, humility and solace. Although it is a living for me, I tutor more subjectively because nothing brings me more peace of mind and pride than helping students succeed and thrive. It's also the most fun job I've ever had! It has been my life's honor to have overseen and assisted the growth and development of hundreds of individual students. I vow to invest and devote my most concerted efforts to each session and individual student I work with.

ESL / Piano Teacher (SPANISH AND ENGLISH)

I grew up in California state, although I am from Arizona. I finished my Arts in Music degree back on 2019, Since then I have been teaching music for a variety of public schools in the United States. I hold a TEFL and two TESOL certifications that allow me to teach English online for both a large group of students and for a more private setting (one-to one). I started teaching English for VIPKID on 2020 and Intervene K-12. Later I decided to start teaching English at my student's homes which allowed me a better interaction and an easier connection that in my opinion is difficult sometimes to makes while teaching online. Nevertheless, teaching English online is my passion, I love teaching, educating, instructing, and tutoring. It's amazing how similar those words are but to know how different they are while you are on the field! Teaching has been part of me since 2017. I have years of experience teaching and I enjoy teaching, kids, teens, college students, and adults alike! You should learn English with me because I can teach what you are expecting, and more. I teach based on the student's desires, but also on the student's needs. If you need help passing your TOEFL or IELTS certification of English this is also the place. I have six months helping and testing college students, improving their certifications' results. I have several resources and books that I use (British Council, Empower Me, Oxford Learner, Speak) to help my students pass their listening, writing, reading, and speaking tests. I am funny, entertaining, direct, fast-paced, dynamic, and extremely patient and I know that if we learn something together you will advance quickly as my lessons are also conversational. The key is to practice! Fall, make mistakes, and keep pressing on to achieve your goals.

Jack Friedman

US History + Social Studies Tutor, UChicago Alum

Social studies and history are my passion. I won the 2010 History Department Award at the Dwight Englewood School in Englewood, NJ, which is “[g]iven to a student who has sought to develop a sophisticated understanding of the past, demonstrated a compelling interest in historical questions, and has held himself or herself to the highest standards of scholarship.” I received a 5 on the AP US History exam and a 4 on the AP European History exam. I later graduated from The University of Chicago with honors in 2014 with a B.A. in History. My senior thesis, “Urban Visions: Building the World Trade Center”, was awarded honors as well. In the context of that rigorous course of study at one of the world’s preeminent research institutions, I got an incredible education in professional historiography and in the substantive arc of American history. My coursework and research had a particular emphasis on 20th Century and political history. After graduation, as External Affairs Coordinator at the Times Square Alliance, I was responsible for leading efforts to promote the history of Times Square to city residents and visitors. I developed a walking tour of the Times Square Area and partnered with archivists at The New York Times to develop a website highlighting the history of the New Year’s Ball Drop. In recent years, I have attended law school and worked as an associate attorney, all of which leaves me quite well-suited to assist history students with developing cogent, logical arguments and expertly deploying relevant facts.
