High School & College Writing and Literature Specialist

My teaching experience includes teaching community college and university, in class and on-line. I have established successful classroom experience as a first-year writing specialist working with a diverse student population, first-generation students, HBCU students, extensive developmental education experience, extensive Summer Bridge experience, teaching reading comprehension, and have developed courses approved as transfer electives by universities across the state of Virginia. I teach students the mechanics of writing, rhetorical writing strategies, and how to perform critical analysis on nonfiction and literary work. Focus is on breaking down complex literary concepts to enable students to equip themselves for success in their writing and to understand how those concepts have practical application beyond the classroom. Having developed and taught honors programs, served in academic advising, evaluated adjunct faculty syllabi for coherency and effectiveness, developed a writing center from conception to production phase and served as writing center director, and developed more effective course material and compositional handbooks, I am adept at supporting student academic success in literary writing. I've taught literature and film based summer enrichment programs for eight to tenth graders, and encouraged students from severely impoverished backgrounds. Additionally, I've supervised faculty working within context of Honors Program, conducted workshops for faculty and staff members on effective note taking system, and delivered creative writing workshops for faculty, staff, and students.

Bilingual tutor (Spanish / English)

I am a graduated educator from university of Cordoba, Colombia in 2009. From there, I began my teaching career in 2010 in an elementary school, more specifically, in second grade. After two years, I moved and taught middle school form two years and finally I also had an opportunity to teach adolescences from ages 13-17. I currently have 13 years of experience teaching different grade levels. 8 years teaching English in elementary and middle school combined, and 5 years teaching Spanish in High School from 9 to 12 grade in the U.S. During Covid-19 I also had the opportunity to teach virtual and hybrid lessons since since I hold an Online teaching certificate from Clemson University. My different certificates on World languages: Spanish, PLT, Online teaching and ESOL make me a good candidate since they have made me perfect my teaching skills in different fields. Among my teaching methods, I like implementing Bloom's taxonomy in my classroom. This helps me bring my students up to the top from the basic skills like recognizing, understanding up to apply, evaluate and create their on way of learning through critical thinking. Of course it is absolutely necessary to diagnose my students first to know their needs and way of learning. In a regular lesson, I will always have my lesson or unit objective, very important so that the students know their expectations, the four skills well developed and carried out through different activities and games as well as formative assessments which helps me track my student's progress and work on or adjust my lesson.
