During my time at Bates College, I went into the local schools and volunteered as a teacher's aid in various classrooms, specifically in English Language Learners classrooms. As a result, I have experience working with students with their readings and have grown to learn how to develop reading lessons. Additionally, during the winter of my junior year, I took a class that involved different recording books (specifically books that focused on providing the multicultural lens) and shared those recordings with the local school to access during the pandemic. Lastly, I also worked closely with one of my education professors to organize virtual tutoring for a family of three, from kindergarten to 7th grade, who were identified as ELLs. This effort occurred during the pandemic year of 2020-2021, and I was able to provide different lessons based on my student's needs and meet about twice a week. Lessons ranged from simple vocabulary and matching with pictures, sight words, simple addition, multiplication, division, and subtraction. In addition, there were also lessons for the 7th grader that included fast fractions and multiplication, vocabulary lessons, reading comprehension letters, and writing and editing.

I have always excelled in reading since a young age. I find that interactive work and encouragement are the most affective ways to help a child with reading. I come from a theater background (that is what my degree is in). I spent many summers helping students and children in our theater camps learn how to break down and read scripts (marking beats, understanding what a word means in order to deliver it correctly). In college we often spent multiple class periods just breaking down the script before we were even allowed to put the scene on it's feet. I also had a class called "play analysis" that was dedicated entirely to reading and understanding scripts. I studied Shakespearean text for a summer in London, England. I often find that teaching reading, in a way, is similar to teaching acting. Confidence is key! Instilling confidence in your child with their reading and overall academic career is my number one goal.

For as long as I can remember I have had a certain knack for English, specifically reading. From a young age, I was placed in advanced reading classes and scored high on standardized testing. Once I started my high school career I continued to excel and took an AP English class. Not only do I have experience in the public school system I was also homeschooled for seven years(fourth grade to tenth grade). For my early elementary years, I attended a public school and for my junior and senior of high school, I attended a local high school. I also have years of experience working with kids. I first started volunteering with kids when I was thirteen years old. I would volunteer at my church to work with children. As I got older I continued to volunteer to work with different age groups (K-5th grade). This led to me taking on more responsibilities and leading kids in different group activities (small groups in the church setting). Once I got to high school I continued to volunteer but in addition to working with my church, I started volunteering with my local elementary school. During my time at the elementary school, I worked with the school's robotics team and helped the kids compete in FIRST robotics competitions. As a university student, I have continued to work with local schools to help children succeed. My university's ISE Chapter actually partnered with a local school in the summer of 2021 to tutor children. Now, how does this information make an impact? Well, being homeschooled has taught me how to prepare lesson plans and actively put them into action. My years of experience working with kids in various settings has taught me how to connect with them and make sure they truly understand what is being taught to them. Every child is different and they will all learn differently it is up to us (teachers, tutors, parents, etc.) to find a method that works best for them.
