Master Student of Therapy

As someone who is pursuing a Master's degree in therapy, I also have an educational background in philosophy that equips me to effectively tutor students in key philosophical topics. I earned my BA in Philosophy, through which I gained an in-depth understanding of prominent philosophical ideas, ethical theories, and influential historical philosophers that have shaped Western thought over millennia. Through my undergraduate coursework, I became well-versed in areas such as logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and political philosophy. I studied the foundational writings of philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, Mill, and Nietzsche. This robust educational grounding in philosophical principles allows me to break down complex concepts for students and help make abstract ideas tangible. Additionally, I have hands-on experience tutoring philosophy students during my undergraduate years. Through group tutorials and one-on-one sessions, I assisted students in grasping challenging philosophical texts, developing reasoned arguments, and refining their writing and analytical abilities. In my current Master’s program in therapy, philosophical issues around ethics, human nature, and the mind-body problem continue to inform my training. I can tie philosophical ideas into practical contexts for students seeking to understand the real-world relevance of philosophical inquiry. My educational background coupled with tutoring experience make me well-qualified to serve students effectively as a philosophy tutor. I am passionate about unpacking philosophical ideas that can profoundly shape how one views and exists in the world. My competence and enthusiasm for philosophy distinguish me as a tutor who can optimize students’ learning.

Humanities, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Cultural Studies, Critical Theory Scholar, Martial Artist

A rather naturally inclined introspective and inquisitive personality of mine led to my becoming a sort of “Nietzschean” at the age of nine. In my own teenage years, I became more aware of what philosophizing actual is, and began independently studying various thinkers, subjects, and topics. I studied Philosophy formally as both an undergraduate and graduate student. Philosophy is THE ultimate academic and scholarly discipline and tradition, from and out of which all other academic disciplines were formed and evolved. Philosophy is the “backbone” of academic traditions. But philosophy is much more than degrees and disciplines, it has formalities, traditions, and limitations just like all the others. The clencher about the word “philosophy,” itself, which stems from two Greek words, “Philos” meaning “love of” and “Sophia,” which means “wisdom” (the love of wisdom), is that it can double as a term used for one’s own, individual sets of ideals, ideas, beliefs, feelings, thoughts, meaning, significance, and creation, aka your personal “philosophy.” The discipline of Philosophy, as we have inherited in the Western tradition, originated in Ancient Greece in the 6th Century BCE. Some branches of philosophy include metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, logic, ethics, social-political philosophy, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and many others. Within philosophy there are also a great variety of schools of thought, theories, approaches, and research. Philosophy attempts to tackle serious, deep, rich, complex, but always open-minded questions. How can one learn “truth” without being open and receptive? – The notion of “truth” is one which philosophy questions. What is “truth?” How do we “know?” How do we know that we “know?” What is the nature of reality? “Consciousness?” Is the mind/soul separate from the body, or are these arbitrary concepts? What is beauty? What is morality? But, for all of its intensities, philosophy enriches your life.

Reading is thinking, thinking is living

I didn't know early in my career that I would fall in love with teaching, but when I left my PhD program in Comparative Literature and became a teacher, it was clear that teaching was where I wanted to spend my life. For the past 12 years, I have been the senior teacher in a nationally-recognized college preparatory school, where I taught Honors English, both AP English courses, and Post-AP/Capstone Philosophy. I began my own course of study at New York University, where I completed BAs in Comparative Literature and Politics, and later an MA in Comparative Literature. My expertise in philosophy derives from the fact that NYU houses Continental Philosophy in the Comparative Literature department, while applied Political Theory is housed in the Politics Department. After finishing my MA, I became an instructor at Hebei University in China, where I taught high-level literature to students with limited English language experience. I then pursued a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine, which offered the foremost program in Literary Theory (the integration of philosophy and literary study) in the US. Since becoming a secondary-level teacher, I have ALWAYS combined literary and philosophical study, as well as arts criticism instruction, to help students develop not only exemplary reading, research and writing skills, but also their broader understanding of the history of ideas and the real-life applications of philosophical perspectives. I am proud to have helped countless students use literary and philosophical study as an avenue to open opportunities and life experiences (of course, I'm also proud of how many of my students have continued their literary and philosophical studies at university, including at prestigious schools such as Harvard and Stanford.) Helping students thrive intellectually and personally remains a joy to me every single day!
