Noel DorrOak Island, NCHigh School & College Writing and Literature Specialist
My teaching experience includes teaching community college and university, in class and on-line. I have established successful classroom experience as a first-year writing specialist working with a diverse student population, first-generation students, HBCU students, extensive developmental education experience, extensive Summer Bridge experience, teaching reading comprehension, and have developed courses approved as transfer electives by universities across the state of Virginia.
I teach students the mechanics of writing, rhetorical writing strategies, and how to perform critical analysis on nonfiction and literary work. Focus is on breaking down complex literary concepts to enable students to equip themselves for success in their writing and to understand how those concepts have practical application beyond the classroom.
Having developed and taught honors programs, served in academic advising, evaluated adjunct faculty syllabi for coherency and effectiveness, developed a writing center from conception to production phase and served as writing center director, and developed more effective course material and compositional handbooks, I am adept at supporting student academic success in literary writing.
I've taught literature and film based summer enrichment programs for eight to tenth graders, and encouraged students from severely impoverished backgrounds. Additionally, I've supervised faculty working within context of Honors Program, conducted workshops for faculty and staff members on effective note taking system, and delivered creative writing workshops for faculty, staff, and students.
