UChicago Student, Chemistry; Pre-Med; Anthopology Major

It is one of my strongest convictions that the ability to write concisely and expressively is the most important professional skill a student will ever use. Writing will earn you A's on your high school transcript, a seat in the college of your choice, and eventually a career. I'm here to help you perfect these skills as you approach these opportunities. A little about my background in reading and writing: Since my mother was the English Department Chair of my high school, she had me write essays every day over summer break when I was in elementary school (don't worry -- I won't make you do that!). Although it wasn't my activity of choice at the time, I'm now grateful that I had the time to start practicing creativity and analytical thinking skills very early on. Although it was optional, I took year-long English classes every year in high school and into my first year at college. In high school, I won an essay-writing competition about climate change that afforded me the opportunity to study at Oxford during the summer of 2020. I also co-founded the Science Journal club, whose members would read and discuss publications produced by alumnae from my high school. Moreover, we would also invite the speaker back to discuss the paper with us – an element that opened up many research opportunities to our club members. In college, I took a humanities sequence called "Language and the Human" in which we examined the relationship between language and power, thought, and identity. This class not only assigned a diverse array of literature, but also sharpened my close-reading skills and ability to write arguments in non-conventional essay styles. Over these experiences, I have accumulated a myriad of skills that I'm ready to teach to other younger students – with the goal of fostering the confidence to achieve writing-related goals, as well as genuine curiosity to explore the subject more.

Brett Chosewood
Alto, GA

Teacher, Tutor, Lifelong Learner

Hello! My name is Brett Chosewood, and I am an English and Language Arts teacher from Georgia in the United States. I have taught both locally and abroad (in countries such as China, Dubai, and Mexico) for over twelve years. In addition, I also have extensive experience in writing, editing, and communication. My education includes a Bachelor’s in English and a Master’s in English Education (Teaching), both obtained from Piedmont College. I am also currently pursuing a PhD in English Composition from Old Dominion University. I love teaching and tutoring because I get to work with students to meet their individual needs. Each student is unique, and I truly love helping my students achieve their goals. I want to be a valuable resource in the lives of those I help, using my experience as a student and as a teacher. Nothing makes me feel prouder than seeing my students succeed. They teach me as much as I teach them. My style of teaching involves building a strong rapport with my students, determining their individual needs, and tailoring my sessions with them to meet those needs. I try to get feedback from and assess students regularly to ensure they are understanding lesson concepts and progressing appropriately. My greatest accomplishment was developing the entire English curriculum for a high school in Sichuan, China. I taught there for a year, and when I began my job, there was no curriculum. I assessed the needs of the students, developed the curriculum for ESL and Literature, and set appropriate bench parts. The result was that all students saw a significant increase in their TOEFL scores. My desire is to bring the same effort and success to your students!

Regent Scholar at Pepperdine University

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been passionate about English. Before I even started Kindergarten, I would email my mom short stories and poems I wrote for her. English was my favorite subject from kindergarten on. I have a love for reading, textual analysis, creative writing, and argumentative essays. Now, I am a Regent Scholar at Pepperdine University. In high school, I earned A's in all my English classes. I was nominated two years in a row by my English teachers as a candidate for the Governor's Honors Program in the subject of writing. I was also selected to join the AP Capstone program which consists of two courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Both courses focus heavily on writing, literature analysis, reading comprehension, and argumentation. I ended both of those courses with high A's. I also participated extensively in Creative Writing Club and Poetry Club. As President of Poetry Club, I spent many hours writing, planning events, and analyzing literature. During this same time I was also a Young Scholar writer for my local city newspaper. I have an extensive background in editing and coaching students. I helped several students with their college application essays during the 2020-2021 college admissions cycle. Some of the students I helped ended up committing to California State Long Beach. I have tutored children of all ages from 2 years old to 18 years old. Most recently I was working on reading and writing comprehension in a classroom of 2-3 year old children. At the same time, I tutored high school students and some college peers in writing.
