English, Global History, Audio Production, Geography and Anthropology Tutor

I have a BA in English from the University of Puget Sound. I have extensive experience crafting academic essays, having research published in Morocco, poetry writing, creative writing, as well as critical theory. I have a deep passion for expressing myself through the written language and see articulation and intricate expression as integral and as one that we must cultivate. I have experience tutoring English to first-generation and immigrant children primarily from India and Afghanistan, helping these children learn a new language at such a young age is ultimately crucial for them to adjust and healthily integrate into a new environment while also developing the necessary expressive tools to have their voices and their perspectives heard. I am passionate about helping equip our developing youth with the ability to think critically, articulate themselves clearly, coherently, and expansively, and ultimately be active participants in the world around them. Whether it is through academic inquiry, poetic creativity, or narrative construction, learning how to deploy language in a variety of facets continues to help me in my life outside of English as an academic discipline as interpersonal communication and expression is a fundamental aspect of life and to refine one's own communication and expand one's sense of expression also allows one to access new ideas or to forge important connections between things that appear to be seemingly disparate, but actually carry valuable connection.

English Speaking Tutor

Students can choose me as their English tutor, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I have lots of expertise and experience with the English language. I am fluent in both English and Vietnamese, with Vietnamese being my mother tongue. I have studied and learned English ever since Grade 1, so my English is fluent at a native-like level. As a non-Native English speaker, I can understand the struggles that non-Native English learners are experiencing. Not only that, but I have also taken English language exams in Vietnam, such as IELTS and TOEFL iBT. In addition, I also have some academic achievements, which involves the English language. In April 2016, I earned a Bronze Medal in the English section, as part of the Academic Olympics Contest, while I was studying at high school in my home city, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Not only that, but I was also awarded with the President’s Scholar Award at SJSU, because I got 4.00/4.00 GPA in the Fall 2021 semester, which was my first semester at SJSU. Followed by my English language experiences, I also worked as a History tutor at the Ohlone College. History majors are trained with various skills, such as reading, writing, and critical thinking, all of which are necessary and relevant to English tutoring. As an introvert. I prefer having deep and meaning communications, in a one-on-one setting. Since tutoring is mostly one-on-one, I think that tutoring is a good fit for me, as it allows me to focus on helping the student. Not only that, but as an introvert, I can relate to others, at an emotional level. Right now, I am working as a volunteer tutor at Step Up Tutoring. Furthermore, I helped my teachers and friends in Vietnam with their English learning and homework before. With my meticulous and thorough approach, my teachers and friends were able to learn English successfully.

Grace Lee
Berkeley, CA

Recent UC Berkeley Graduate, English Tutor

I have fostered my lifelong passion for and knowledge of the English language and Anglophone literature at the University of California, Berkeley. After writing numerous essays and analyzing various literary works, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a 3.98 GPA. Aside from my major-related coursework, I edited poetry as an associate editor for the Berkeley Poetry Review and the student-run journal, To An Unknown God. I have further applied my expertise in the subject of English by tutoring different age groups of diverse backgrounds. With the company Ringle Inc., I taught English to non-native speakers—from elementary-school students to those in college and even working professionals—according to their individual skill levels and learning styles. At the YMCA in Downtown Berkeley, I helped high schoolers write, revise, and edit their personal statements (known as "personal insight questions") for admissions to campuses in the University of California university system. By studying the written word, people learn how to express themselves more accurately, comprehensibly, and richly. This skill can build their confidence and sense of power, as they come to understand better themselves and others in the medium of language. I want to help students experience such meaning and significance in the works they read and the writing they produce, as I have, in my own work involving the English language.
