Molecular Engineering Student at the University of Chicago Passionate about STEM Education

I have studied Chemistry for the last four years and will continue to do so as an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago where I double major in Molecular Engineering (specializing in Chemical Engineering) and Chemistry. When I first started learning Chemistry as a sophomore in high school, I was engaged and interested in the class, but was not able to translate that into performing well on tests. Nevertheless, I wanted to learn more Chemistry and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation, so I took AP Chemistry my junior year. Finally, during my senior year of high school, I took an Honors Organic Chemistry class where I won the class award at the end of the year with an average of 98% in the class. At the end of high school, I knew I wanted to pursue Chemistry at a higher level since I had fell in love with the subject. In college, my favorite and most challenging class was Honors General Chemistry that I took this past year. I persevered through the class and ended up with straight A's for the year. Next year, I am taking Organic Chemistry, and my exposure to other types of Chemistry has developed my "Chem-tuition." I understand what it's like to struggle through Chemistry. I have pushed myself and stayed up all night studying, but I have learned so many techniques and gained so much knowledge about Chemistry. As your Chemistry tutor, I am able to meet you where you are and teach you my tips and tricks. I will personalize your learning so you can both succeed in the classroom and enjoy learning about Chemistry.

Ph.D. Chemistry Tutor

I have a natural aptitude for chemistry and an innate ability to make complex concepts accessible for most anyone. I was selected as a tutor for the Valdosta State University Chemistry department due to my professors seeing me excelling at chemistry and helping fellow students to do the same. I taught one year of high school science after graduating with my BS and enjoyed being in the classroom. The experience of watching students who thought science was boring become fascinated by what the were learning was especially rewarding. I left the classroom to continue my own education and entered the graduate program at Auburn University. After a year of teaching freshman chemistry laboratory classes, I was selected to teach senior inorganic laboratory classes due, again, to my mastery of the subject and the ability to make it accessible to young learners. I continued to tutor throughout my graduate and post-doctoral career before leaving science to start a patient advocacy organization for families affected by hereditary colon cancer. I again found myself explaining complex medical terms and surgical procedures to lay people and eventually led the development of patient-friendly educational resources. Most recently, I worked as a subject matter expert for the Electric Power Research Institute, again developing chemistry educational resources for new employees. I truly feel it is a gift to be able to help learners understand the complex field of chemistry and hope to be able to share that gift with you.
