Joshua BurlileSan Francisco, CAEnglish and Python Instructor teaching through doing
I am an English as a Second Language instructor with over 8 years of experience teaching. Previously, I have taught in high schools, universities, and refugee resettlement agencies.
I have extensive experience in all four language domains including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. My expertise lies in spoken language communication, with a particular emphasis on pronunciation and non-verbal communication skills. For example, during my time at The Ohio State University, I prepared undergraduate and graduate students to confidently give lessons in English in front of hundreds of students in a classroom setting. Many of these students went on to achieve high levels of proficiency, enabling them to succeed in their academic and professional pursuits.
My teaching methods are student-centered, focusing on interactive and immersive techniques. I use a variety of resources, including digital tools like language learning apps and online platforms, to enhance the learning experience. Additionally, I tailor my lessons to meet the individual needs of each student, whether they are beginners or advanced learners, ensuring that each lesson is both engaging and effective.
One of my most memorable successes was helping a refugee student who initially struggled with basic communication skills. Through personalized lessons and consistent practice, this student was able to improve dramatically, eventually securing a job where English proficiency was essential.
What sets me apart from other tutors is my dedication to creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment. I believe that confidence is key to language acquisition, and I work hard to build my students' confidence in their abilities.
