UC Santa Cruz Graduate Offering Math Tutoring up to Calculus - 3+ Years of Experience

I have been tutoring for over three years, and my teaching approach is centered around understanding you as an individual. Creating a comfortable environment and getting to know you personally, as well as your goals for these lessons, is important to me. I am flexible and willing to work with you at any skill level. If you feel unsure about the overall concept, we can start from scratch using one of my pre-planned lesson plans. I have carefully crafted these lesson plans from my time as a college tutor. This will help us establish a strong foundation for future lessons. On the other hand, if you feel confident about the concept but need more practice, we can work through multiple practice problems together until you can complete them independently. I value getting to know my students, and I'm genuinely interested in hearing about your dreams and passions. I believe in active learning to keep my students engaged throughout the lessons, avoiding a lecturing approach. Tutoring is a collaborative effort between the tutor and the student, working together towards the shared goal of success. There's nothing more fulfilling for me than witnessing the positive outcomes of our lessons. For our first free lesson, our focus will be on getting to know each other better. This will allow me to understand your specific needs and learning style, enabling us to determine if we are a good fit for each other. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions at all!

As a visual learner one of my favorite subjects in middle and high school was geometry since it allowed me to utilize visual illustrations to solve problems. Creating visual illustrations and using various learning activities by teaching to oneself and repetition allowed me to fully comprehend the subject material. Teaching elementary geometry requires the use of visual illustration specifically building 3D models with the students, thus allowing the student to grasp an effective comprehension regarding the shapes, also repetition is key and using various learning gaming activities allows the student to memorize the shapes. Middle school geometry is mainly focused on applying the tools that were introduced in elementary geometry into real life examples, although utilizing 3D model can be helpful but one of the main elements that helps students is the application methods such as; creating index cards of the shapes and brief description helping students to comprehension, creating a math journal to apply the concept material into life examples. Repetition is key by utilizing hands on activities helping the student toward the application of these tools, some activities that are used are transformations foldable shapes, math word walls, coloring angles pairs, angle relationship task cards, the geometry map. High school geometry is divided into various categories based on the students' performance such as; geometry, geometry honors or advance, AP geometry. Thus, activities vary based on these categories, one of the main concepts that high school students struggle with is analytic geometry, and Proofs. Since high school Geometry is very abstract requiring spatial and logical skills, activities that are used to help the students with this skill are creating advanced 3D modeling, application using real life situation to solve the problems, computer gaming activities, but more importantly helping the students to develop logical thinking abilities.
