Writing essays is something we all must do at one point or another. Whether it is for English Composition or for writing a research article, proper formatting and grammar is necessary. It is important... to note that learning how to read/interpret a work to obtain the information pertinent to what one's instructor wants is paramount. While I am not pursuing an English degree or work myself, this is something I had to learn the hard way. Let me help you not do it the hard way. Over the past two years I have written essays in several formats, research articles, copy, and editorials for publications. In this time I have tutored college students for two semesters as a Peer Mentor which saw me assisting with everything from Composition to Sociology to Environmental Science to African American Literature. One semester was also spent tutoring K-5 on the fundamentals of English and its structure. I graduated recently as summa cum laude and continue to write both for fun and for work. My approach will be somewhat different to others as I did not enjoy reading or writing as a child, and instead had to learn to love the language. Hi, welcome! I am John Smith (yes, it's my real name) and I live in Chattanooga, TN. I have lived here for 5 years and am currently attending school here after joining the work force for several years... . My hobbies/passions include: environmentalism, hiking, obsessing over Dark Souls, A24 movies, writing fiction, and anything involving dogs (bigger is better). I love tutoring because I feel like so many people do not believe in their ability to learn and I have seen firsthand how tutors can help students see their true capabilities. If it weren't for a tutor helping me, I would not have gone back to college with such success. Plus, some of my best friends are those that I have helped tutor as its a collaborative process in my eyes. I pursue tutoring much like I pursue anything in my life: through research and logic. That is not to say there is no subjectivity as all people must approach things differently, but I like to follow the most recent, proven data to achieve best results. I strongly believe in working smarter, not harder. However, sometimes hard work is necessary. A student's mental well-being and stress levels are incredibly important to actually absorb material and have it be able to be expanded upon. I also greatly enjoy the Socratic method, but also understand its limits. I am a person that reads research articles for fun. I am keenly aware of the limits of my knowledge.
