"I am an educator who goes above and beyond to ensure you reach your goals."

When I use the Reciprocal Teaching technique with my 4th graders, I guide them through four key steps: Predicting, Questioning, Clarifying, and Summarizing. Predicting: Before we start reading, I ask my students to look at the title, headings, and any pictures. Together, we make predictions about what the text might cover. I encourage them to share what they think might happen or what the main idea could be. This helps set a purpose for reading and gets them curious about what’s next. Questioning: As we read, I stop periodically and ask them to come up with questions about the text. They might ask why a character acts a certain way or what a tricky word means. I let them share questions with a partner, which gets them thinking deeper and helps make connections. Clarifying: After reading a section, I check in to see if anyone found anything confusing, like unfamiliar words or complex ideas. We discuss these together, and sometimes, I break down tricky words or concepts. This step really helps them build vocabulary and clear up any misunderstandings along the way. Summarizing: Finally, after we finish reading, I ask them to summarize the main points or events. We talk about what happened and why it was important. This helps reinforce their understanding and encourages them to focus on the big ideas. Using this technique regularly helps my students become more active, engaged readers and builds their confidence in understanding different texts.

Your Favorite Reading and Writing Mentor

I have a degree in Secondary Education as well as English Language Arts. With these degrees I was a High School English Language arts teacher for 5 years. I have always been an avid reader and writer and found it such a privilege to share that love and knowledge with my students. I am no longer a part of the public education system, however, that love and desire to impact students is still my purpose and my passion. When I was in Middle School and High School I was conflicted between loving reading and writing when I was at home, yet, deeply disliking my ELA classes. Seriously...it was my least favorite subject but one of my favorite hobbies. In school ELA seemed so boring and completely irrelevant to my daily life or, honestly the world in general. Yet, when I read for myself, I was transported into the worlds that the authors created. I felt as if, for a brief moment, I was living another life. Then in the times when my head felt too full and I needed to vent, but not to a person, I wrote, and it gave me such a feeling of power and release. I was so confused how I could dislike something so much in school when I loved it so much personally. When I became a teacher, I realized the answer. Reading and writing are such a personal thing yet, they are often taught as if they aren't. Often students are given instructions such as, "read quietly" or "write a 5-sentence response"... with no reason. Where is the exploration in that? Where is the self-expression? Often times students need a different approach than what you typically see to thrive in their reading and writing skills. They need one-on-one attention and someone who will explore the beauty and true power of the written and spoken word. That is my goal, to offer a different approach and help my students reach their full potential. Learning should be fun; growth should happen naturally through exploration and understand. You'd be shocked at the incredible results this approach yields.

Brett Chosewood
Alto, GA

Teacher, Tutor, Lifelong Learner

Hello! My name is Brett Chosewood, and I am an English and Language Arts teacher from Georgia in the United States. I have taught both locally and abroad (in countries such as China, Dubai, and Mexico) for over twelve years. In addition, I also have extensive experience in writing, editing, and communication. My education includes a Bachelor’s in English and a Master’s in English Education (Teaching), both obtained from Piedmont College. I am also currently pursuing a PhD in English Composition from Old Dominion University. I love teaching and tutoring because I get to work with students to meet their individual needs. Each student is unique, and I truly love helping my students achieve their goals. I want to be a valuable resource in the lives of those I help, using my experience as a student and as a teacher. Nothing makes me feel prouder than seeing my students succeed. They teach me as much as I teach them. My style of teaching involves building a strong rapport with my students, determining their individual needs, and tailoring my sessions with them to meet those needs. I try to get feedback from and assess students regularly to ensure they are understanding lesson concepts and progressing appropriately. My greatest accomplishment was developing the entire English curriculum for a high school in Sichuan, China. I taught there for a year, and when I began my job, there was no curriculum. I assessed the needs of the students, developed the curriculum for ESL and Literature, and set appropriate bench parts. The result was that all students saw a significant increase in their TOEFL scores. My desire is to bring the same effort and success to your students!
