Your Favorite Reading and Writing Mentor

I have a degree in Secondary Education as well as English Language Arts. With these degrees I was a High School English Language arts teacher for 5 years. I have always been an avid reader and writer and found it such a privilege to share that love and knowledge with my students. I am no longer a part of the public education system, however, that love and desire to impact students is still my purpose and my passion. When I was in Middle School and High School I was conflicted between loving reading and writing when I was at home, yet, deeply disliking my ELA classes. Seriously...it was my least favorite subject but one of my favorite hobbies. In school ELA seemed so boring and completely irrelevant to my daily life or, honestly the world in general. Yet, when I read for myself, I was transported into the worlds that the authors created. I felt as if, for a brief moment, I was living another life. Then in the times when my head felt too full and I needed to vent, but not to a person, I wrote, and it gave me such a feeling of power and release. I was so confused how I could dislike something so much in school when I loved it so much personally. When I became a teacher, I realized the answer. Reading and writing are such a personal thing yet, they are often taught as if they aren't. Often students are given instructions such as, "read quietly" or "write a 5-sentence response"... with no reason. Where is the exploration in that? Where is the self-expression? Often times students need a different approach than what you typically see to thrive in their reading and writing skills. They need one-on-one attention and someone who will explore the beauty and true power of the written and spoken word. That is my goal, to offer a different approach and help my students reach their full potential. Learning should be fun; growth should happen naturally through exploration and understand. You'd be shocked at the incredible results this approach yields.

Ph.D. Chemistry Tutor

I have a natural aptitude for chemistry and an innate ability to make complex concepts accessible for most anyone. I was selected as a tutor for the Valdosta State University Chemistry department due to my professors seeing me excelling at chemistry and helping fellow students to do the same. I taught one year of high school science after graduating with my BS and enjoyed being in the classroom. The experience of watching students who thought science was boring become fascinated by what the were learning was especially rewarding. I left the classroom to continue my own education and entered the graduate program at Auburn University. After a year of teaching freshman chemistry laboratory classes, I was selected to teach senior inorganic laboratory classes due, again, to my mastery of the subject and the ability to make it accessible to young learners. I continued to tutor throughout my graduate and post-doctoral career before leaving science to start a patient advocacy organization for families affected by hereditary colon cancer. I again found myself explaining complex medical terms and surgical procedures to lay people and eventually led the development of patient-friendly educational resources. Most recently, I worked as a subject matter expert for the Electric Power Research Institute, again developing chemistry educational resources for new employees. I truly feel it is a gift to be able to help learners understand the complex field of chemistry and hope to be able to share that gift with you.

Professional Learning Coach | UChicago Student | 34 ACT

After taking the ACT twice, I was able to obtain a top 1% score using the learning techniques I meticulously self-learned throughout high school. I know everything needed to get an ivy level score, and I'm ready to apply this knowledge to any gaps my students have in the most effective way possible. If after 10 lessons you still haven't achieved your dream score, I'll do the rest for free until you're at the score you desire. My four years of dedicated tutoring have allowed me to refine my teaching methodologies and develop a deep understanding of the ACT's structure, content, and scoring criteria. I've had the privilege of working with over 200 students, each with their unique strengths and weaknesses. This exposure has given me the ability to adapt my teaching approach to suit individual learning styles and needs effectively. In addition to my expertise as an ACT tutor, I bring a unique advantage to your test preparation and academic growth. My commitment to effective learning strategies extends beyond the ACT, making me not only an ACT teacher but also a study coach who can significantly enhance your performance in various academic pursuits. I've invested time in personally studying the most effective learning strategies, drawing from cognitive science and educational research. This deep dive into learning methodologies has equipped me with a toolbox of techniques that go beyond memorization and surface-level understanding. These strategies form the cornerstone of my teaching approach, ensuring that you not only excel on the ACT but also develop essential skills for success across your academic journey.

UChicago Student, Chemistry; Pre-Med; Anthopology Major

It is one of my strongest convictions that the ability to write concisely and expressively is the most important professional skill a student will ever use. Writing will earn you A's on your high school transcript, a seat in the college of your choice, and eventually a career. I'm here to help you perfect these skills as you approach these opportunities. A little about my background in reading and writing: Since my mother was the English Department Chair of my high school, she had me write essays every day over summer break when I was in elementary school (don't worry -- I won't make you do that!). Although it wasn't my activity of choice at the time, I'm now grateful that I had the time to start practicing creativity and analytical thinking skills very early on. Although it was optional, I took year-long English classes every year in high school and into my first year at college. In high school, I won an essay-writing competition about climate change that afforded me the opportunity to study at Oxford during the summer of 2020. I also co-founded the Science Journal club, whose members would read and discuss publications produced by alumnae from my high school. Moreover, we would also invite the speaker back to discuss the paper with us – an element that opened up many research opportunities to our club members. In college, I took a humanities sequence called "Language and the Human" in which we examined the relationship between language and power, thought, and identity. This class not only assigned a diverse array of literature, but also sharpened my close-reading skills and ability to write arguments in non-conventional essay styles. Over these experiences, I have accumulated a myriad of skills that I'm ready to teach to other younger students – with the goal of fostering the confidence to achieve writing-related goals, as well as genuine curiosity to explore the subject more.
