Haley Sarokin
Pomona, CA

CSU Political Science Student, Reading Tutor

As soon as I learned how to read it's something I've always been passionate about. It was my favorite subject starting from elementary all the way through high school. I love reading books, poems, novels, and also writing my own literature. In high school, I participated extensively in book clubs as well as receiving A's in all my English/Reading classes. In my book clubs, we would each read a paragraph out loud throughout the entirety of the book, which helped all of us with effortlessly pronouncing and declaring our words clearly. Having a sibling who grappled to understand reading for most of their life , I understand first-hand the struggle of trying to learn how to read. I believe this makes me a proficient tutor for those who are looking to advance their skills in reading because I can understand the difficulty. I have an extensive background in tutoring and coaching students in order to advance their reading skills. l worked with an after school special needs program where I helped several students with their speech class where they had to publicly read passages and long speeches in front of the entire class. Some of the students I helped moved up two reading levels and others were able to move to a more advanced class. I currently tutor my fellow peers at college in reading. I specifically focus on helping freshman with words that are harder to recognize and with reading long passages fluently and accurately; which is something I've seen most people struggle with.

News Director, Professional Writing Mentor

I have years of professional experience in teaching writing. I also have experience tutoring in journalism, resume writing, and English. In college, I was a tutor at our Learning Resource Center on campus. I focused on helping my peers in essay wring, grammar, and technical writing. I tutored college level students for two years while I attended Flagler College. It was also there that I earned my degree in Journalism and Media Production with a concentration in Journalism. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with the Distinguished Journalism Student award, presented to the top journalism student. I was also awarded the Faculty Department Award from Flagler College which is presented to graduating seniors who "have distinguished themselves through scholarly activity and academic achievement in their selected disciplines of study." Since graduating, I have volunteered tutoring grades k-12 for three years and have continued to help my college level peers in reviewing their work. I have helped recent graduates secure jobs by helping them compose resumes and proofreading their work. On top of tutoring, I have served as a News Director for two years, working as an editor-in-chief. I proofread articles daily and am constantly immersed in new content and trends. I am passionate about writing and I enjoy teaching because I have found that most students already have the answers, they just need help getting their thoughts organized on paper. I can provide the tools to help you reach your fullest potential. In our sessions, I will work with you and cater to your learning habits to give our time a meaningful and lasting learning experience.

Kira Annis
La Verne, CA

Elementary School Tutor (K-6)

Throughout elementary school I had a disinterest in my education. I struggled with learning and understanding in English and Mathematics. However, as I furthered my education, I began to grow to develop a love for learning, and a love for participating within my classes. This was with the help of tutors and my patience family members. As a person who struggled with understanding simple elementary school concepts, I aim to assist the very same students who are also struggling with their learning. I aim to make my tutoring sessions fun and engaging for students. I incorporate interactive activities, games, and real-life examples to make math more relatable and enjoyable. By creating a positive and supportive learning environment, I encourage students to actively participate and develop a love for math. I also have proficient experience with educating and teaching my younger siblings to be prepared for their next school years. Each year during the summer time, I'd create lesson plans allow them to get a head start on the next school years curriculum. I utilized resources such as worksheet textbooks, printed out math problems, and previous textbooks I've used. By doing so, they felt ready to take on the next school year and be proficient in not just learning the skills, but using their educational tools later on in life. Lastly, I am currently a teaching assistant for my Biology department at my private university: The University of La Verne. Where I also study Biology.

Undergraduate Student - B.S. Computer Science

Since the introduction Khan Academy course I took in sixth grade, Computer Science has never left my life and I'm happy for it. From middle school to highschool, I have been worked on my skills through learning languages, such as Python and Java, and through programming many types of robots. My highschool allowed us to take Advanced Placement courses from sophomore year on and since then I have received mostly 5s on my exams, two of which were Computer Science ones. In highschool, I was additionally the Lead Programmer for the Robotics Team for almost four years. It has been nothing but fun attending all the Robotics meets, programming hackathons, and Cybersecurity competitions. Currently, I am a Computer Science major and have joined numerous clubs centered around that including Gamespawn, which is a game development club, and the Cyber club, which focuses on Cybersecurity. Both clubs have brought me various experiences to add to my background ranging from Game Jams to Capture the Flags to even Junior Officer positions. I understand the intimidating factor of Computer Science, especially for many children, however that is exactly what I aim to eliminate. Utilizing my experience and skillsets, I wish to be able to offer guidance and inspire young minds to not only learn this valuable field of knowledge but also to raise their self-confidence and be able to challenge themselves. This is what I was able to achieve at the Summer Programs I tutored for last year and is what I aim to achieve here at Lessonpal.
