Friendly, Experienced Tutor & Academic Coach

I really know about teaching for the High School equivalency exams. (It’s still best known as the GED, but in some places the test might also be called the HiSet or TASC— but they all serve the same purpose!) After more than 20 years of experience as an instructor, tutor, adult education program manager and tutor trainer, I have learned the ins and outs of the whole process— from getting started again with learning, preparing for the tests, earning passing scores, all the way to taking the next steps with diploma in hand. My experience comes from my extensive work in community education programs for teens and adults. Over the years I’ve helped literally hundreds of students who were feeling stuck after leaving school for whatever reason to get back on track, earn their degrees and move forward in their lives. I've mastered the content in all the GED subjects: Reading and Writing, Social Studies, Science, and Math. It’s a lot of material, but I have developed a system to target the most important concepts and skills. I also know plenty of techniques for dealing with test anxiety, and can show you how to maximize your scores, though I prefer to make learning about more than just passing the test. I know that the test scores and grades are important, but for me the biggest accomplishment in earning an equivalency diploma is the self-confidence you feel after overcoming challenges, taking responsibility for your education, and sticking with it until graduation. But most of all, I know what it feels like to earn an equivalency degree. A long time ago, I dropped out of High School myself in the 12th grade. But I got my diploma from a Community College, went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree and eventually made a career as an educator helping students just like I was. I do this work because I believe that everyone has the potential to succeed if given the support. Thanks for reading this. If you’re ready to get started, I hope to hear from you!

Brett Chosewood
Alto, GA

Teacher, Tutor, Lifelong Learner

Hello! My name is Brett Chosewood, and I am an English and Language Arts teacher from Georgia in the United States. I have taught both locally and abroad (in countries such as China, Dubai, and Mexico) for over twelve years. In addition, I also have extensive experience in writing, editing, and communication. My education includes a Bachelor’s in English and a Master’s in English Education (Teaching), both obtained from Piedmont College. I am also currently pursuing a PhD in English Composition from Old Dominion University. I love teaching and tutoring because I get to work with students to meet their individual needs. Each student is unique, and I truly love helping my students achieve their goals. I want to be a valuable resource in the lives of those I help, using my experience as a student and as a teacher. Nothing makes me feel prouder than seeing my students succeed. They teach me as much as I teach them. My style of teaching involves building a strong rapport with my students, determining their individual needs, and tailoring my sessions with them to meet those needs. I try to get feedback from and assess students regularly to ensure they are understanding lesson concepts and progressing appropriately. My greatest accomplishment was developing the entire English curriculum for a high school in Sichuan, China. I taught there for a year, and when I began my job, there was no curriculum. I assessed the needs of the students, developed the curriculum for ESL and Literature, and set appropriate bench parts. The result was that all students saw a significant increase in their TOEFL scores. My desire is to bring the same effort and success to your students!
