Michelle Nikolaou

English Language and Literature Teacher (Exam, Creative, Prep)

Hello everyone, my name is Michelle and I'm Irish/Cypriot and live on the sunny island of Cyprus. I have been teaching for the past five years but have always been an avid reader and writer. I have memories from childhood of filling out empty copybooks with stories, keeping long diaries and documenting my life through the written word. Since language is something I genuinely enjoy playing with, I aim to remind my students that language can produce wonderful effects and help us become more deeply understood to ourselves. I have dabbled in journalism, travel writing, poetry and more. Over the last few years, I have also dedicated time to becoming a professional astrologer where interpretation, myth and observation have been taken to new levels. I often write astrological offerings and read natal charts for people. I consider it a new language, much like what I'll be teaching you! I have 5 years of teaching experience, both within the school system ,as well as, within the realm of private tutoring where I hone in on my students' needs and reconnect them with a sense of enjoyment and interest when refining their skills within the English Language. I have prepared students for exams ranging from IELTS, to IGCSE and A Levels covering both English Language and English Literature. Whether it's getting into the nitty gritty of grammar, or language analysis in comprehension texts or whether you need help honing your literary thinking and interpretations, I'll be right there supporting you and helping you find a way to properly articulate your thinking. I help students 'hack' exams by finding simple and effective ways to fulfil task requirements and creating fun and engaging ways of remembering material. I also teach crucial essay writing skills and how to create layered and rich arguments or interpretations. Lastly, I have experience with mentoring young people with creative writing- so if you're interested in storytelling, writing your own poetry.

Jose Ireta
Cisco, Texas

Experienced College Admissions Counselor

I have been working with high school students since 1998. I retired early from public education in 2021. My career in education began with at-risk youth to help them with their post-secondary endeavors. To this date, I am still in contact with former students who graduated from UCLA, USC, Cal Berkeley, and Stanford. My work with them led me to Conejo Valley Unified School District in 2002. My last assignment was at an International Baccalaureate high school as a school counselor. Late in my tenure, I began to work with a private college admissions company, UCEAZY (now known as Upward Path). This job, juxtaposed with my work with CVUSD, made me realize how much role had changed and renewed my passion to work with students on a one-on-one basis, walking them through the entire college application process from start to finish. This also motivated me to begin my own business. I believe in Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, namely starting with the big picture in mind. I encourage students to begin with their end goal in mind and then work their way backwards. I find fulfillment in helping students bring out the best in themselves in their college applications, from résumé building to essay editing. As an early retiree, I am looking for consistent work where I can bring my experience of working with high school students in their pursuit of their college aspirations to your company. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need additional information.

Rhobie Underwood
Fort Worth, TX

A Ph.D. student, postcolonial scholar, college instructor, and a lover of languages!

My teaching experiences could be divided into three different types. The first type would be the part-time jobs in the Philippines as an English college instructor for a computer school, a face-to-face tutor for Koreans, and an English online teacher for Chinese and Taiwanese. The second type is full-time teaching which happened mostly in Thailand, which gave me an opportunity to teach not just one but at different levels. I had experience teaching from Kinder to Grade 11 (Thai, Brazilian, Malaysian), as well as Thai teachers, and university and immigration staff. I teach the teachers how to speak English and how to teach English in a classroom. I teach the university and immigration staff basic conversations as well as advanced English so they can have better opportunities in their job as well as help them gain confidence when talking to English speakers. The third type of teaching experience would be the teaching assistantship that was granted to me here in the USA. I teach English 180 and I also work as a writing center consultant at the University Writing Center. I help students to become curious, purpose-driven, passionate, and credible writers, readers, and researchers. Moving to Texas and starting my job last Fall 2022 here in UNT, I have nothing but commitment, optimism, and excitement everytime I enter the classroom. One of my English 1310 students wrote this in the reflective essay: “Ms.Underwood made this class feel like such a safe space for all her students, she made the learning experience, for at least me, a very fun one. Some of the favorite things that Ms.Underwood did to make this class a better environment would be making class activities fun. One that stood out was raising a toast and each speaking about something from the class and something we learned. Being able to an activity made it interesting, it is also that helped in writing this essay."

Jacob Grotjan

Compassionate and Experienced Professor of Biblical Studies

I extensively study and teach college courses in Hermeneutics (biblical interpretation), ancient Hebrew, Koine (common) Greek, Old Testament studies, New Testament studies, and general subject matter within the field of biblical studies. As a compassionate and experienced professor of biblical studies, I am dedicated to teaching students how to properly read, study, and apply biblical principles to their lives, encountering Jesus in a multitude of ways along the journey. In fact, studying the Bible is all about connecting with Jesus. However, there are plenty of errors that naturally occur when a student is self-taught, such as eisegesis (saying and teaching something the biblical text does NOT actually say), false teaching (1 Tim. 1:3) and seeking to master Scripture with a heart that does not honor God (pride). However, instead of falling into these issues above, I will teach you how to derive sound biblical principles, using appropriate steps and methodologies, to find meaning in biblical passages and apply those meanings. NOTE: When scheduling your first appointment with my calendar availability, please select the 30-min option FIRST. The goal of this first session is for me to gather more information about you, your interests in biblical studies, your prior knowledge, etc. After this assessment is conducted, a short/long-term plan is formulated to your specific needs that you and I have discussed.
