Humanities, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Cultural Studies, Critical Theory Scholar, Martial Artist

My expertise in Social Studies evolves from my educational, academic, scholarly, and professional background in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, from my own experiences in primary and secondary education, through college and university as an undergraduate as well as graduate student, and into my professional life as a scholar and academic, having taught courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences and the college level, and, although not as a formal role, have also taught, as a Substitute Teacher, some Social Studies at the elementary and middle school levels, as well as assisting and guiding my own child, since he was in 3rd grade (2017.) I regard Social Studies to be a primary and secondary education version of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and Cultural Studies on the tertiary level. Social Studies is the integrated, and interdisciplinary, study of various fields of humanities, arts, and social sciences, including history, economics, geography, and political science within the realm of primary and secondary education. The term was coined by 20th century American educators as a catch-all term for these subjects, and others. One of the purposes of Social Studies is to integrate several disciplines with unique methodologies and special topics, into one coherent field of study, which communicate by sharing different academic "tools" and perspectives for deeper analyses of social topics, problems, and issues. Typically, Social Studies also aims to train and prepare students for informed, responsible participation in a contemporary, diverse, democratic society.

Brett Chosewood
Alto, GA

Teacher, Tutor, Lifelong Learner

Hello! My name is Brett Chosewood, and I am an English and Language Arts teacher from Georgia in the United States. I have taught both locally and abroad (in countries such as China, Dubai, and Mexico) for over twelve years. In addition, I also have extensive experience in writing, editing, and communication. My education includes a Bachelor’s in English and a Master’s in English Education (Teaching), both obtained from Piedmont College. I am also currently pursuing a PhD in English Composition from Old Dominion University. I love teaching and tutoring because I get to work with students to meet their individual needs. Each student is unique, and I truly love helping my students achieve their goals. I want to be a valuable resource in the lives of those I help, using my experience as a student and as a teacher. Nothing makes me feel prouder than seeing my students succeed. They teach me as much as I teach them. My style of teaching involves building a strong rapport with my students, determining their individual needs, and tailoring my sessions with them to meet those needs. I try to get feedback from and assess students regularly to ensure they are understanding lesson concepts and progressing appropriately. My greatest accomplishment was developing the entire English curriculum for a high school in Sichuan, China. I taught there for a year, and when I began my job, there was no curriculum. I assessed the needs of the students, developed the curriculum for ESL and Literature, and set appropriate bench parts. The result was that all students saw a significant increase in their TOEFL scores. My desire is to bring the same effort and success to your students!

Old Dominion University Mentor and English Master

English has always been a passion of mine. It has always been my favorite subject. I've always been interested in reading and analyzing literature of many genres. I write poetry, craft debates, and argumentative speeches. Additionally, I've published short stories on Story Bird. Moreover, being on the debate team, in high school, has afforded me the opportunity to respectfully and properly delve into literature with an open mind. I worked as a reading specialist for two years as well as I'm currently in a teaching role at a gifted school. The accelerated program is far more sophisticated than the lesson plan provided by the City of Hampton. I also participated in reviewing and editing English writings and thesis for my college peers. In addition to editing, I create lesson plans for my middle school students. I read and edit students' essays for standardized testing. By being in a teaching environment, it lends support to mentoring and tutoring students in English Language Arts. Teaching, tutoring, and mentoring my middle schoolers in English helps them to strategically help them build upon their vocabulary, reading proficiency, context clues, test taking skills, and overall literary devices. Lastly, holding degrees in Social Sciences and Human Services, I've had an abundance of high level English, Literature, and Philosophy courses. These courses honed in on my critical thinking skills-which allows me to teach English effectively. My love for words, grammar, and English Language Arts is a lifelong love to the art itself.

Thinking Through Your Doc One Idea at a Time

I have an academic degree in English and a passion for Social Studies! My English skills will help us to transform the social studies content of your paper into a cogent and well-thought out presentation, which will include the historical and socio-political content that will then inform the inferences we will make about that content. A recipe for a successful paper! You can't miss. My Master's degree in English focused on African American studies with an emphasis on 19th century African American women's literature. Inherent to the analysis of the so-called "black experience" is the socio-political and cultural influences of the dominant society on Black Americans which they wrote about in their slave narratives, novels, and political tracts. Because many schools and universities in the 1990s were beginning to focus on the literary contributions of minorities in America and abroad, I and others wrote proposals to fund workshops that educated teachers and professors in this area of social studies. Much of this nascent work is in full bloom now in our schools and university which has had a profound impact on the curriculum you are studying today. If we work together, I will be able to help you navigate and interpret some of the social issues and narratives enlivening the actions of peoples and politicians which you will be writing about. I look forward to seeing you in lesson. Thank you, Kelley
