About
Hi! I'm Alecia and I'm a current resident of Hampton Roads, Virginia. I have an Associates of Science in Social Sciences and a Bachelor's of Science in Human Services. I've been mentoring and tutor... ing since college. Additionally, I tutored and mentored at a youth center through my internship and volunteer work.
Moreover, I enjoy volunteering my time within my community such as: Meals on Wheels, Project Homeless, and the local Food Bank. I am currently a member of Tau Upsilon Alpha National Honor Society through Old Dominion University-my Alma Mater. It brings be joy to mentor and tutor students to help bridge the gap between having a basic knowledge of the subject versus having a full understanding and comprehension of English Language Arts. I tutor in grammar, poetry analysis, english literature, drama, informational texts-just to name a few.
I admire students how my ability to tutor and mentor students in English allows full integration on what can seem to be a daunting task. I have the capability to teach on a gifted level This level of critical thinking involves using Kaplan's Icons, deBono's 6 Thinking Hats, and Depth and Complexity, etc.
Reading comprehension of any English texts is one of the foremost interdisciplinary skills I teach my students. Whether they are reading a nonfiction article for a language arts assessment, researching scientific journals for a project, or reading a chapter of a social studies textbook, the skillset of understanding any informational text is paramount to acquiring and using new knowledge.
Oftentimes, students need help to comprehend texts. There are many strategies I use in teaching students how to decode and interpret what they read. But as a deep and complex, teacher I understand that the quickest, most effective strategy for internalizing information is giving them the tools to think beyond the surface.
