Are READING DEMONS Ruling Your Life? STRIKE BACK! Corrective Reading Builds Fluency & Confidence.

My short story to describe my qualifications and expertise teaching students who struggle to read from grades four on through grade 12 are as follows: 1. Ph.D. in special education from Utah State University. 2. MSW in child welfare and psychiatric social work from the University of California, Berkeley. 3. TEFL Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. 4. TESOL Certificate on IELTS requirements to prepare students taking the IELTS test. 5. 20 years diagnosing and correcting errors and poor reading habits for students ‘in grades 4 through 12. 6. 15 years providing therapeutic and social services children and adolescence who were victims of severe traumatic experiences. 7. Consultant with the US Department of Education to determine what reading curricula is in compliance with standards established for classification as a science of reading curricula. 8. 20 years’ experience in child and adolescent residential facilities where students had comorbid emotional disorders combined with reading disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia, autism spectrum and developmental disabilities. Qualifications are one matter but equally important and perhaps more so is what is behind and supportive of the qualifications? For me it is a passion that every child can be taught to read and it is our obligation to assure every child is given that opportunity, with validated reading curricula and teaching processes. In my early professional years providing therapeutic services for traumatized children and youth I witnessed disastrous effects that failing in their school placements brought to them. It was this realization that drove me back to school where I obtained a doctorate degree in special education. While degrees are perhaps one measure of expertise it is not the only one. For me, of more importance is my experience of having seen the positive effects time and time again that my students take away after solving their problematic reading issues.

CSU Political Science Student, Reading Tutor

As soon as I learned how to read it's something I've always been passionate about. It was my favorite subject starting from elementary all the way through high school. I love reading books, poems, novels, and also writing my own literature. In high school, I participated extensively in book clubs as well as receiving A's in all my English/Reading classes. In my book clubs, we would each read a paragraph out loud throughout the entirety of the book, which helped all of us with effortlessly pronouncing and declaring our words clearly. Having a sibling who grappled to understand reading for most of their life , I understand first-hand the struggle of trying to learn how to read. I believe this makes me a proficient tutor for those who are looking to advance their skills in reading because I can understand the difficulty. I have an extensive background in tutoring and coaching students in order to advance their reading skills. l worked with an after school special needs program where I helped several students with their speech class where they had to publicly read passages and long speeches in front of the entire class. Some of the students I helped moved up two reading levels and others were able to move to a more advanced class. I currently tutor my fellow peers at college in reading. I specifically focus on helping freshman with words that are harder to recognize and with reading long passages fluently and accurately; which is something I've seen most people struggle with.

Special Education Tutor

I encompass a growth mindset, I am self-motivated, and am consistently committed to enhancing my practice as an educator. As a graduate from Chapman University's masters program in Special education, I have extensive knowledge, taking rigorous courses such as Teaching English Language Learners, Literacy & Pedagogy tutoring a 4th grade student through Chapman's literacy program through the Kathleen Muth Center, and administering assessments. Also, I have extensive experience creating curriculum and teaching students with autism about appropriate social skills. Additionally, I have experience working as an educational specialist intern and through student teaching. In the past years, I have worked as a full-time education specialist at an independent study high school for students who are completing or making up credits to receive their high school diploma. My passion and devotion for teaching and helping those with special needs comes instinctually and fills my heart with joy. I have a strong commitment to diversity and ensure that all my students are given equal opportunities. In my classroom, I take pride in using a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, implementing the strategies and principles when teaching my lessons. The design of instructional goals I create for my students, the methods, the assessments, and the resources and materials are customized and differentiated to meet each students individualistic needs. By following a UDL framework and fostering a growth mindset for myself and my students, my classroom is an environment where differences are embraced, every student is encouraged to be themselves, and equal opportunities are given to all. I strongly believe in breaking down the barriers (both physical and mental) that often discourage or prohibit others from learning and growing to the best of their individualistic abilities in the educational setting.
