Artist and Educator

My passion for art started at age eight when I learned to draw Hey Arnold for the first time under the guidance of my cousin. I continued on as a cartoonist in my early years, drawing my favorite Looney Tunes characters then over time, I evolved into a well-versed painter. High School is when I took my passion seriously, learning various styles of art from charcoal drawing to watercolor painting. I continued my pursuits in college, majoring in Visuals Arts with a concentration in Fine Arts at The College of New Jersey. Eventually I switched my major to history and education, receiving my bachelor's degree in Urban Elementary Education and History. The change was influenced by my fears but since returning to art, I work to encourage students to pursue their callings while providing them with the tools needed to do so. As a former full-time educator, teaching large and small groups in a classroom of up to 30 students, I have the ability to differentiated instructions and materials to meet the learning needs of each student. Since pursuing art full-time, I taught visual arts virtually to middle school students and in-person to elementary and middle school for over a year. My two years as a full-time educator has enabled me to teach art to diverse groups of students and create lesson plans on the color wheel, color mixing, proportion, the envelope method as it relates to proportion, human features, and more. Although I did not continue my artistic pursuits in college, I was introduced to new methods of painting such as oil painting and abstract art. Since my art career, I have taken online classes at New York Academy of Art and Long Island Academy of Fine Art with their continued studies program. I learned and continue to learn valuable skills both as an artist and educator that has enabled me to become a full-time artist, teacher, and business owner of Broken Edges LLC. I am equipped to create my own works of art and teach students how to do the same.

Nina DeMilta

College Access Mentor, Writing Tutor, and Religious Studies Tutor

Hello! My name is Nina and I am a senior at Nazareth University in Rochester, NY. I have had experience tutoring people of all ages in essay writing since my sophomore year of high school. I have been a head editor of my school's literary magazine. This job required me to check grammar, organization, and sentence structure of essays, poems, prose, and other forms of writing. In my high school and collegiate years, I have had experience tutoring individuals from ages 10-40 years old and have adapted to various learning styles. In college, I am a music therapy student with a minor in interfaith studies, which enables me to write different types of essays regularly. For the last three years, I have been a tutor for my university's writing center. This has allowed me to work with various students of different ages and backgrounds, along with helping people write essays from all subjects (science, math, english, history, etc.). I have skills in compassionate mentorship through my major and I love to bring this into my tutoring. My goal is to help people gain confidence in their writing skills and give them the independence to take into their future academics. As a college student, I have experience with scholarship and college essay writing, academic writing (research, rhetorical analysis, argumentative, biographical, clinical, etc.), and creative writing (fiction, poetry, fantasy, etc.). I hope to provide affordable tutoring for those who cannot always afford the high price it takes to further their writing skills. Since I am in college, I am still learning how to be the best tutor possible, therefore I often charge less than that of a professional price.

Kip Rosser

Writing Tutor / Public Speaking Tutor

My passion for writing began somewhere around fourth grade – stories, poems. Of course, from then on, there were also reports and essays I wrote for specific classes, conforming to whatever necessary parameters were required. Things really took off in eighth grade, when I wrote my first play. In addition to all school-required writing assignments I’ve always written stories and novels (fiction and non-fiction), poetry, plays, children’s books and screenplays. From middle school through graduate school and right up to the present, I’ve never stopped. I eventually became a copywriter for various marketing and advertising agencies, as well as working independently on a freelance basis for personal clients. Assignments entailed writing in every conceivable style, and writing about every conceivable subject from authoritative essays on the latest innovations in thermal insulation materials, to chemical processes involved in the washing of industrial parts, to a vegetarian cookbook about foraging and preparing meals with wild mushrooms. My work as a teaching artist has equipped me for working with students (and adults) of just about any age and the materials are always appropriately tailored to the age group or grade level. All this is to say that whatever the student’s individual abilities, or particulars of assignments, my tutoring takes all factors into account. We can look at the ways to do research, ways to best organize a given assignment (is an outline best? are index cards with key points the best? should we just start writing?). We learn to determine the right style of writing for the assignment; if need be, we’ll learn about footnotes, grammar, sentence structure, modes of expression and more. I hold the firm belief that anyone of any age can learn to write well if motivated to do so, and here is the key: staying motivated is easy by continually fostering a love of language, personal expression and always making the learning process fun.
