Dawn De La TorreCharlotte, NCHorticulturalist
Horticulture has been a life long passion of mine. I grew up with my grandfather, who ran a carnation green house in Colorado. Spending a lot of my youth around plants, animals, and in nature.
My passion grew for the natural world, when I went to American Public University to obtain my B.S. in Environment Science with a concentration in fish and wildlife management.
From there I found my way into Natural Resources and Environmental Education. Investigating Invasive plant specimens and educating the public.
Realizing species connections to plants, I became obsessed with learning about them. The why, how, and when of the plant kingdom. Concentrating very specifically on Native Plant specimens. I became a professional gardener to further explore my fascination.
Working in Public garden spaces has given me a great respect for what gardeners and landscapers do. It’s not easy work, but the rewards far exceed the backbreaking pain of digging a hole.
Finding my way to Landscape Design and Horticulture Maintenance has been the most rewarding part of my career. Caring for the landscape is the most profound we can do as humans. We can make the world a better place for us all to live. Plants are the organism that tie us all together, and learning about them is by far one of the most beneficial things you can do.
