History: Let's Go! Educator

Hi! I am Hannah, a native of CT. My goal is to spread my love of history to both adults and young adults. Growing up, most of my peers viewed history as "boring" and just a memorization of facts and figures. I could not quite understand this. To me history was so much more. It helped (and helps) to explain why different regions of the world and why cultures are the way they are. You can find examples of my approach through Facebook (Hannah's History Tutoring), linkedIn, and Academia.edu. For example, without learning the history of Egyptology, it just seems kind of random that the Rosetta Stone is held in the British Museum and not the Louvre. However, as soon as you dig a tiny bit deeper you discover that there are actually concrete reasons why this is the case! In 2011 I actually traveled to Egypt and was able to visit the Pyramids at Giza, the Valley of the Kings, and so many others! One of my sub-fields is gender in the ancient world. What were women's lives in like in ancient Greece/ Rome/ Egypt / and other ancient cultures? What kind of evidence do we have to give us some of these hints? I also make it a teaching goal to de-mystify the ancient Egyptians and their culture. The Egyptians were actually not obsessed with death. Rather, a lot of their private dwellings (even high status ones) were built out of organic materials that don't survive time very well. In contrast, their tomb/ remembrance structures tended to be built out of stone, which does have a higher survival rate.

Born and raised in South Korea, I embarked on her musical journey at the age of 5, immersing herself in classical piano and music studies. Throughout my academic pursuits, she earned a Bachelor's degree in music composition and music theory from Seoul National University (SNU), followed by a Master's degree from Northwestern University in IL, and finally achieved her Ph.D. in Musicology from SNU. My teaching experience includes serving as a Teaching Assistant in music history at Seoul National University for around three years. In music history class, I occasionally play the piano to illustrate a point. I also encourage students to come to my office during hours, especially to discuss ideas, plans, and style before and after writing. I have worked as a piano faculty member at the Musical Offering at Evanston School of Music in Illinois over the past five years, I have honed my teaching skills, effectively blending music history with theoretical and practical techniques. I offer instruction not only in traditional classical music but also in contemporary and popular music, with a particular emphasis on K-pop. My teaching expertise is further enriched by my post-doctoral work as a Music History Researcher at Harvard University. This has allowed me to build strong connections with students of diverse ages and proficiency levels, ranging from beginners to advanced learners. My primary goal is to foster a genuine love for music with historical knowledge among my students. My passion for music and my dedication to nurturing the talents of my students make her a remarkable presence in the musical community.

Law Student with BA in American History

American History has been my passion forever, but my academic career in the field began 7 years ago and has continued ever since. Starting in Sayville High School, I was enrolled in every Honors and AP history class possible, and I received a 5 on the American History AP exam. I then went on to receive a Bachelor's degree in History with a minor in Psychology from the University of Alabama, where I graduated magna cum laude and with Honors. I specialized in colonial American History and my senior thesis received a national award from the Colonial Dames of America association which included a $500 grant. During my time at the University of Alabama, I was on the Pre-Law track which supplemented my studies in American History with constitutional and legal analyses of American historical topics. I now attend Brooklyn Law School where I plan to receive my JD. I help both my friends and siblings with every aspect of their academic careers, and have extensive training/experience in researching and writing historical papers. I understand the rigors of being a student, and understand that teachers may not provide tailored instruction for students who need a different form of instruction. I will use my knowledge of student psychology and my own personal experience to carefully craft lesson plans and give each of my students the tools they need to succeed on a case-by-case basis. I look forward to passing on my knowledge of American History to the younger generations.
