First Year in UMKC's 6-year B.A./M.D. Program

I have a deep passion for helping others express their ideas effectively, which aligns with my long-term goal of pursuing medical journalism to improve communication in medicine. Having successfully navigated the college application process—writing over 60 essays and gaining admission to over ten schools, including Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and UMKC’s competitive 6-year B.A./M.D. program, where the admissions committee told me I received the highest possible score on my personal statement—I understand firsthand what makes a compelling college essay. Beyond my own applications, I have extensive writing experience as the Editor-in-Chief of my high school newspaper, where I honed my ability to craft engaging narratives and mentor younger writers. My writing has been recognized at the highest levels, including being named one of ten Missouri All-State Journalism Team members by the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA). I also won first place in National Student Press Association (NSPA) competitions for both a Newsmagazine Cover and a Staff Editorial, along with top honors in sports reporting and news writing. In addition to my writing expertise, I have experience tutoring students of all ages. While working at Mathnasium for a year, I tutored preschool through high school students in math, developing strong communication and teaching skills. This experience has given me a deep understanding of how to adapt my teaching style to different learners, ensuring that each student gains confidence in their abilities. As a college essay tutor, I will not only help students strengthen their writing but also guide them in crafting essays that showcase their unique voice and story—just as I did during my own application process. My background in journalism, storytelling, and one-on-one tutoring makes me well-equipped to help students stand out in the admissions process.

Brady Adolph
Iowa City, IA

PhD Student in Classical Studies

I have a Bachelor's degree in Classical Languages from the University of Iowa and a Master's degree in Classical Studies (Latin track) from Indiana University. In the fall, I will be continuing my studies in pursuit of a PhD at a different institution, although I have not made the choice yet. At Indiana University, I was the instructor of record for four semesters of language instruction. I have had the opportunity to work with both undergraduate and graduate students. As the instructor of small classes, I have worked regularly one-on-one with my students. During my undergrad, I worked as the department Greek tutor. Also, I volunteered one school year (2018-2019) at Iowa City High School, teaching Latin. Otherwise, I have made a study of both Greek and Latin for about eight years. I have taken seven and a half years of Greek/Latin classes, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. As part of my graduate instruction, I worked as an assistant instructor for three semesters: Ancient Greek Culture (FA20, SP21), Classical Mythology (SP20). I was responsible for leading the discussion sections for these classes. In discussion section, we reviewed points of scholarly interest in translated Greek texts. We formulated hypotheses concerning these points of interest, and developed arguments in support or refutation. I worked with students on developing their papers for these classes, and I was responsible for grading all of the essays. I have written numerous A papers, and a couple A+ papers, for graduate seminars. Recently, one of these papers served me successfully, as a writing sample in an application to a high-ranking PhD program in Classical Studies. I understand the standards of academic writing in the humanities, and the expectations of instructors for graduate and undergraduate students.

Andrew Primous
Evanston, IL

Multi-talented grad student; Teaching students to love writing one session at a time.

I am a first year graduate student studying fiction and multi-modal storytelling at SIU-Carbondale. I got my Bachelors degree in English Literacy with a specialization in creative writing. I am the best tutor for the student who "Hates Writing". By the end of our sessions you will never again struggle to write or articulate anything. In my undergrad I excelled in creating incredibly interesting and engaging essays that did not just get me good grades, but instead helped heighten my overall intelligence. I was never the best technical writer, nor am I the most literate. However, what I am good it is disintegrating the speech to page barrier that a lot of struggling students have. In other words-- I know how to make writing as easy as talking. In Grad school I was approached to be a tutor for struggling athletes. It was here where I realized my ability to understand the way a student thinks, and from that, create the exact way for them to understand what I am saying, and therefore what the prompt demands. Yes, I will help the students that I am tutoring get an A+ on their next paper, but any ole tutor can do that. What I do is make students both verbally articulate, and I bring to the front of their brains the most profound questions they can conjure. A few tutoring sessions with me and I will change the way in which you view writing. You will be able to harness the power of words and theory in a way that will better your engagement with society.
