English Speaking Tutor

Students can choose me as their English tutor, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I have lots of expertise and experience with the English language. I am fluent in both English and Vietnamese, with Vietnamese being my mother tongue. I have studied and learned English ever since Grade 1, so my English is fluent at a native-like level. As a non-Native English speaker, I can understand the struggles that non-Native English learners are experiencing. Not only that, but I have also taken English language exams in Vietnam, such as IELTS and TOEFL iBT. In addition, I also have some academic achievements, which involves the English language. In April 2016, I earned a Bronze Medal in the English section, as part of the Academic Olympics Contest, while I was studying at high school in my home city, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Not only that, but I was also awarded with the President’s Scholar Award at SJSU, because I got 4.00/4.00 GPA in the Fall 2021 semester, which was my first semester at SJSU. Followed by my English language experiences, I also worked as a History tutor at the Ohlone College. History majors are trained with various skills, such as reading, writing, and critical thinking, all of which are necessary and relevant to English tutoring. As an introvert. I prefer having deep and meaning communications, in a one-on-one setting. Since tutoring is mostly one-on-one, I think that tutoring is a good fit for me, as it allows me to focus on helping the student. Not only that, but as an introvert, I can relate to others, at an emotional level. Right now, I am working as a volunteer tutor at Step Up Tutoring. Furthermore, I helped my teachers and friends in Vietnam with their English learning and homework before. With my meticulous and thorough approach, my teachers and friends were able to learn English successfully.

PhD Candidate; English Tutor

I have taught English at the collegiate level for over 9 years, and have taught across subjects and areas of emphasis. My courses often integrated approaches to the close reading of literary texts with the instruction of composition and rhetoric. Through this, I was able to effectively teach my students not only how to examine important literary works in detail, but also how to effectively articulate their thoughts on said material. I have taught a number of courses in 20th and 21st Century American and Anglophone literature using these methods to great success in the classroom. I myself was an exceptional English student at every level of schooling, which ultimately resulted in me pursuing an English PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Even when I was not primarily pursuing English studies, I was still a passionate student of the subject, which informed my interest in international law while a Political Student at The Ohio State University and eventually resulted in me transitioning to English studies at Wright State University. These experiences provide me with an important perspective on how the tools of English study can apply to contexts beyond those of the discipline, which my students have found extremely valuable both in the classroom and beyond it. I have also worked at a music writer at points throughout my career, providing me with real-world experience regarding the application of the techniques of English study. In particular, the many hours I have spent editing my articles and those of others as a writer allow me to provide valuable practical advice for any student who wants to become a better writer.
