Teacher - Attorney

I love everything about writing - from the initial draft to the final edits - though writing good, solid prose is no walk in the park. But the benefits to learning how to write well, never stop. Scientists have even asserted that writing causes regions of a writer's brain to become more active because the writer may be subconsciously seeing the scenes in their head that they are writing down - just as though the action were happening to them in real life. When I taught high school social studies and tutored language arts, I always made sure that my students did a lot of writing. And though it may sound old-fashioned, I do still rely on E.B. White’s Elements of Style, as the foundation for teaching my students how to write. I know it has served me well in my work as a freelance writer formulating speeches and creating promotional pamphlets. My sense is that too often students and teachers allow the mechanics of writing to get in the way of what they want to express. I often tell my students to just "write what they mean." From there we can deal with the grammatical mechanics of writing, but with an emphasis on using the active voice. Using the active voice to write can be difficult to get used to, but when appropriately put to work, it often simplifies sentence structure, eliminates unnecessary words, and forces the students to write in more compellingly and persuasively. I think it's the key to good writing.

Rose Gause
Parkville, MD

Experienced Journalist, Creative Writer, Elementary Teacher Aide and Reading Enthusiast

Hi! My name is Rose, I love reading and helping students not only become better readers and writers, but also have an appreciation for it. I’m happy to help students reach their learning goals by helping them with materials they provide and/or creating personalized lessons. I've loved reading since I was a child. I enjoy introducing students to new novels along with books I used to love to help them reach their reading goals. Typically, I like to incorporate reading into my teaching plan whether the student's goal is to become a better reader or writer. Reading helps students subconsciously become better writers by exposing them to new vocabulary, sentence structures and new ideas. I also like to use nonfiction and fictional stories. This allows students to use practical insight as well as their imagination because both are needed to be strong writers.   I’m currently a virtual reading teacher at Amplify, which is a literacy program that uses a phonics based curriculum. At Amplify, I work with kindergarten through 6th grade and participate in their monthly professional development trainings. Periodically, I assist teaching in a classroom setting helping students with reading and writing. I’m also an in person substitute. I graduated cum laude from Frostburg State University with a major in mass communication and a focus in journalism. While in college, I was an entertainment writer for the school newspaper and the writer for the Social Marketing Team. I studied journalism abroad and wrote a published feature story. I also volunteered abroad and taught Spanish speaking students ages 5-7 in a summer camp. I believe everyone can have love for reading and writing if you have the right materials and comprehension skills. As a tutor, I want to share my passion with others and help them with their studies/creativity. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!
