Emily WenkeNew York City, NYChildhood Education Student
I am a second year college student studying childhood education with a concentration in biology. I will be certified as a generalist to teach grades 1-6 in New York State in 1.5 years, but hope to specifically focus on teaching science.
I have volunteered with children for 8 years, and have been working with them in a paid position for 3. In high school, I took AP Biology along with other AP and college level classes, and graduated Valedictorian. I also tutored middle schoolers in various subjects, including science.
I have taken college level coursework in childhood development, teaching methods and planning, education and technology, chemistry, and various biology classes. Currently, I have a 4.0 GPA in college and am in the honors program. From an education perspective, I am able to design lessons that follow standards and differentiate lessons to meet diverse student needs.
While I am young, I am passionate about teaching science. I think it can be overlooked in schools in order to meet reading and math standards, but is just as important. Students can develop so many skills from science lessons that they can apply to other subjects and outside of the class. Personally, I think science at an elementary level can introduce a variety of topics that students may be curious about and pique their interest for year to come, making it one of, if not the most interesting subject!
