Andrew Dang
Austin, TX

Cello Instructor

When I first held the cello as a 6th grader with almost no musical background, I knew deep down that I found my one passion for my life. Throughout my nine years of cello playing, I have played and led many ensembles including being principal for the Newman Smith Orchestra, which has the longest UIL sweepstakes streak in Texas, Newman Smith Symphony, Chloe Trevor Music Academy Orchestra, TMEA All Region 31 Symphony, and the University of Texas University Orchestra. I was also a member of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. I have also won several awards during my time as a cellist. I was an TMEA All-Area Cellist ranked 55th in the entire state of Texas. During the UIL Solo and Ensemble State competition, I earned eight superior ratings, the highest possible ratings, in various ensembles and solos. I have also earned the Outstanding Performer Rating for my performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto 4th Mvt during my senior year and received the Hiedi Trevor Scholarship Award during my time at CTMA. Nowadays, I am currently playing cello at the University of Texas University Orchestra (UTUO) and doing various performances around Austin, Texas for different clubs and events. I also founded a cello choir where we perform various cello ensemble pieces in the city of Austin. I also have teaching experience and even ran a small cello studio in the DFW area metroplex with students of both beginner and advanced skill levels. I firmly believe that learning the cello should be an enjoyable experience, and I prioritize creating a fun and supportive environment for all my students. By studying with me, you will not only develop your technical and musical skills but also discover the joy and fulfillment that comes with playing the cello.

Kate Speck
San Diego, CA

Professional cello teacher, music tutor, and performer

I have played cello for over twenty years, and now professionally for ten. I started my music studies through the strings program in elementary school. Once I got to high school, I began taking private lessons in preparation for college. I graduated in 2017 from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a bachelor's degree in cello performance and music education. I studied with Astrid Schween of the Juilliard String Quartet and Edward Arron of the Ehnes String Quartet. From there, I have been teaching, performing, composing, and publishing sheet music arrangements for string musicians full time. I teach cello lessons through my private home studio and music schools including Rainey Institute and The Beck Center for the Arts with students ranging from six to sixty years old! Since 2020, I have plenty of experience teaching private and group classes virtually, becoming quite familiar with online teaching tools and techniques. I love guiding my students to the next level of their ability with personalized lesson plans and long term goals. Outside of teaching, I perform for weddings, operas, musicals, shows, events, recordings, and more. I have a passion for creating arrangements for string musicians of popular songs. Over 150 of my arrangements are published on websites such as Sheet Music Plus and Sheet Music Direct. Music theory and aural skills are incorporated in cello lessons to promote a well rounded music education. I would love to work with you in your music journey! I will meet you where you are, provide tools and exercises for you to grow, and celebrate your successes with you. I can't wait to hear from you!
