In "Academic Writing Strategies", we will dive into the best practices of creating an essay. You will learn about the processes of writing, the step by step methods of developing a thesis, outlines, drafting and citation, and the importance of technical details. For 6 years I have been an advanced writer of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and academic pieces. In high school, I created my children's book "Molly" about a boy and his dog who share a physical disability. In college, I took additional courses in creative writing of both short stories and longer fictional pieces. One of my longest fictional pieces, "MULTIVERSE: The Alternate Plane", follows characters in a world identical to our own who have obtained superpowers through nuclear activity in the atmosphere. My longest academic piece was my graduating thesis titled "Modern Magick: Occultism in Japanese Religion and Culture" which analyzes ancient Japanese magical practices and their relationship to modern culture. Through all of these courses and experiences I have obtained a wide variety of knowledge in areas of writing style and structure, character development and design, the processes of writing fictional pieces verses drafting essays, brainstorming, etc. I hope that I'll be able to apply what I've learned to help you in your journey to becoming the best writer you can be!

Academic Writing is a core skill in communication and the basis of most university programs. It is an exercise in critical thinking, clarity of expression, and logical reasoning, and it is a passion of mine to help students to develop these skills. During my 23 years of full-time teaching, I have taught academic writing skills to thousands of students. While a great deal of my experience in teaching academic writing stems from my years as an AP and IB MYP/DP teacher, every class I taught was a reading and writing intensive class regardless of the subject matter and the level of the students. I was an English Major in college, so I had to read a lot books and write lots of essays. My youngest children are twins, and they are currently college sophomores. My daughter loves to read - she would walk into trees reading a good book! Writing essays came fairly easy to her. My son, however, hates to read. His book report usually started and ended with phrases such as, "This book is good. I would recommend you read this book". He also famously submitted an essay with the conclusion, "The climax of this book was that the dog didn't die, so that was awesome!" Unfortunately for my son, the dog did die in the book, but he failed to read the entire book! I helped him make an outline for the remainder of the book when he finished reading it, and submit a rewritten essay that came to a different conclusion. I also recently helped both twins with their college application essays, so I have experience in many different kinds of essay writing.
