About
Hi! My name is Tina.
I grew up in rural Nevada, graduated from public schools, went to community college for 2 years, then transferred to the University of Nevada, Reno. In May 2002, I graduated wit... h my Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in both Chemistry and Math. In December 2018, I graduated with my Master of Science degree in Environmental Science with an emphasis on bacteriophage research. Currently, I am working on my Ph.D. in STEM education at University of Nevada, Reno.
I have focused the past 23 years of my career working in higher education, managing/coordinating science labs and teaching biological science courses including: general biology, cell and molecular biology, and microbiology. I worked in science labs for over 20 years and I have taught biology classes since 2002. In the last several years my focus has shifted from the science lab to science education and public health.
I really love science and math and teaching it to others, mainly because I love when students learn new things and are able to relate what they have learned to their lives.
I view my classroom as a community of learners striving to improve. My main goals are for students to feel comfortable and have safe space for them to be vulnerable and to ask questions because that is where the learning happens. I welcome and encourage my students to ask questions, be inquisitive, work towards innovation, and collaborate with others because that is the hallmark of science.
In my "free time", I enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking, and lake days. I have been married for 23 years, have a Bullmastiff, an English mastiff, and am a very proud aunt to two wonderful nephews. I enjoy reading, both non-fiction in my field of study and fiction for fun, working out, and spending time with my family.read more
