About
Hello, my name is Kevin Grimmett. I live in St. Cloud, Florida, and my hobbies include playing video games, reading fantasy novels, and learning about mathematics. The most fulfilling aspects of tutor... ing are helping students reach their full potential, and allowing them to gain some confidence boosts along the way. I am an optimist, and I believe that everyone is capable of excelling in math. It just takes practice and proper guidance. I am thrilled to share my knowledge of mathematics with others on this platform because it really is an amazing subject with so many fascinating real world applications.
My tutoring philosophy is centered around the Socratic Method and direct teaching when required. I believe that critical thinking is the most important skill to master. This is why I ask students guided questions during the problem solving phase, and ask them to explain why they believe the answer they have selected is correct. This type of feedback loop reinforces the student's understanding of the topic, which will enable them to become better problem solvers in general.read more

Mathnasium
Mar 2023 - present
I am an instructor at the Mathnasium learning center of Lake Nona. I assist children in developing n... umerical fluency by teaching them useful tricks and techniques that they can employ to avoid relying solely on finger counting. I encourage them to draw diagrams so that they can visualize the problem, and I ask guided questions to have them arrive at the answers themselves. I reinforce the student's understanding by asking them how they arrived at the conclusion and why the specific method that they used works. I mostly use the Socratic method of instruction, but when the student is really lost on a problem and doesn't know how to proceed to the next step, then I switch to direct teaching. I work with groups of 3-4 children at a time rather than one-on-one instruction.read more

Remind Tutoring
Nov 2022 - Feb 2023
I was an independent contractor for an online tutoring platform called Remind. I tutored at the high... school level in everything from pre-algebra to pre-calculus. I encouraged students to think critically about problems and to understand them on a conceptual basis. Rote memorization of formulas and theorems is not enough: knowing how and when to apply said theorems, and to really understand their implications is crucial. My mission is to make mathematics enjoyable and overall less intimidating. Yes math can be hard, but I find that the harder things in life are generally more worthwhile. All of my students walk away from my sessions with a good understanding of the topic.read more

Mathease
Jun 2022 - Sep 2022
I worked as a virtual mathematics tutors for a company called Mathease Tutoring. I tutored middle an... d high school students in pre-algebra and algebra 1. I guided students towards solving the problem when they were stuck, and gave helpful hints on how to approach that problem. I've learned a lot about mathematics education, such as the value of patience, avoiding technical jargon, and finding unique ways to teach the subject if the formal theorems and examples felt too abstract. I am passionate about mathematics, and I derive a lot of pleasure in making it as easy as possible for people to understand.read more
