About
Hello!! I am Jonathan Nwokeji, an undergraduate student at UNC Chapel Hill. I was born and raised in Memphis, TN my entire life to two Nigerian parents. I am a HUGE soccer fan (go Chelsea!) and love l... istening to jazz, classical, and rap music. Along with soccer, I watch handball and am a goalkeeper for the club handball team at UNC.
I have always had an affinity for teaching for as long as I could remember. I have two younger sisters, and even when I was young, I enjoyed teaching them how to tie their shoes or how to count.
What makes teaching so enjoyable to me is the opportunity to understand other people's perspective. I love being able to see how my students arrive at their conclusions, even if the reasoning may be flawed. Once I understand their reasoning, I can point out what was wrong with their logic and guide them to the correct conclusions.
I have a straight-forward approach toward teaching. When I teach, I will go through an example problem step-by-step, asking rhetorical questions to the student along the way. I explain the logic and reasoning behind each step, making sure that the students understand the 'whys' and 'hows' for each method. I also try to insert analogies and comparisons in my explanations to make things easier to relate to. After going through a couple examples, I will try to get the student to try a similar problem, while of course guiding and helping them when needed. This strategy is best for getting the student to truly comprehend the material independently and help with memory retention.
Additionally, I strive to form a bond with the students I teach, especially for younger students. I usually ask them how their day has been and what they do for fun. This is important because it makes tutoring more enjoyable for bthe student and allows the student to be more willing to engage in the content.read more
