Hello, I am Heather! I am a state certified teacher with 15 years of teaching experience. I teach all subject areas, but helping students read is definitely a passion of mine. During my career, I kept... noticing that students would come to me year after year unable to read. This made me start to evaluate, research, and critique the way we taught students how to read. That is when I discovered the Science of Reading. This research was eye opening to me. In fact, I share with my students all the time that our brains were not designed to read, but designed to communicate through oral language, and when you think about it, reading is a very complex process. Just like a programmer codes a computer, we have to code our brain to read. We do that by hearing, seeing, saying, and doing, along with marking words so our brain understands why letters do what they do. We no longer have to guess whether a vowel is long or short, or why a words sounds the way it does. Since then, I have used my knowledge of Science of Reading to help students become better readers and feel more confident about themselves as learners. When I am not in a classroom or tutoring, I love spending time with our kids who keep us busy with their various activities. I also love to read and travel.read more
