Current pre-law student and tutor!

I am a current college student studying pre-law. I've been tutoring for about 5 years now. I have taught kids of all ages in math, english, essay writing, and standardized test prep. I was always really good at writing and I enjoyed it! I entered writing competitions through AVID in high school and even won a couple. I think I can offer a different perspective as a current student versus a teacher who hasn't had to write an essay for a long time! I have a little technical training in elementary/ early childhood education because I studied speech pathology with a concentration in early intervention for my first year of college, so I was training to be a speech therapist or aid. I learned about how kids learn best and how to cater those lessons to a specific child's needs. I ultimately switched to my current program because of work opportunities but I learned a lot about teaching in that year! Through that program, I worked in classrooms, schools, and in a medical setting with elementary-age kids. I got good grades through high school and participated in stem club, as well as AVID. Currently, I am tutoring a few kids in early elementary school (grades 1-3) and one in sixth grade. I prefer working with younger kids in math because it's where I have experience but I can definitely help middle and high school age kids in english, writing, and some math! College Writing Tutor with specialty in Film and Media analysis.

I recently graduated from Manhattanville College with a BA in Communications and Media and a minor in Film. Starting my sophomore year in 2020, I began an internship with the writing center on campus and was learning tutoring pedagogy so that I could work in the writing center as a tutor myself. That next semester, I held a paid position as a Peer Writing Tutor until my graduation this May (2023). Over my time as a tutor, I assisted students generally in a virtual one-on-one environment. These students were mostly early undergrads, but I received a number of graduate students to tutor as well. I also occasionally would assist students asynchronously, providing them with email feedback after editing and commenting inside the document. The experience I had as a tutor was flexible and allowed me to work with the students solely with the goal of helping them improve their understanding of the material. It was invaluable to me in the development of my own learning as well! I also volunteered at a number of different educational programs across Westchester, NY as a tutor during my time in college. These students were anywhere from ages elementary to high school to college. Some workshops were also held for special needs students in particular. These were wider classroom experiences, with the number of students being around 15-20. These experiences were more about managing the class and students to understand one lesson rather than working to enhance one student's learning.

Professional Writer and Editor, Writing mentor

I have been a strong English student since my elementary school days, which carried forward through my scholastic career. In my junior year of high school, I placed into a program allowing me to take a college writing course for credit. I also spent time copy editing for my high school newspaper. When I attended university, I placed out of English 101 and 102 based on my performance on the written portion of the assessment exams. From there, I continued to excel in written assignments, whether 500 word essays or 5000 word papers. I wrote a weekly column for my college newspaper, then became the news editor, a role in which I both wrote and edited stories. In this role, I worked with other students to not only improve their writing through editing but showing them what I edited and why. I offered feedback to help them improve. I began freelance news reporting during the last two years I was in college. From there, I became a full-time reporter for several years, before being hired by the age of 30 to become the Managing Editor of a startup local newspaper. In this role I collaborated with my staff reporters and stringers to help them maximize their abilities and reach their potential. From there, I was hired to become the Writer-Editor for a national non-profit based just outside Washington, DC. Here I wrote and edited content for a national audience, for both the organizations website, electronic newsletters and the bi-monthly magazine sent to members. I am a writer at heart, but also a teacher. When in school, I often helped my peers with their written assignments, working with them to craft and hand in written assignments they never knew they were capable of producing. I did not write for them but helped them write for themselves. I like to bring out the best in people and help them in ways they can carry forward even when I am no longer there.
