Cypress College 2022 Alumni, Hospitality Management

I’ve been learning a lot of Tagalog growing up since I was little. During my grade school days here in the US, before moving to the Philippines temporarily, I learned some basic Tagalog words from my family members whenever I didn't understand a word, while watching a Filipino channel on TV. I studied Tagalog in the Philippines as one of my subjects in high school, 10 years ago at College of the Holy Spirit Manila. For two years of high school and three years of college in the Philippines, I learned a lot from my professors in my Filipino and Social Studies subjects. I have a passion for learning various languages, that’s why in my free time, I try to learn other languages online such as Korean, Spanish, Japanese, German, French, and Latin. After moving back to the US in September 2018, I continued my major in Hospitality Management at Cypress College. Spring 2020 was the time I took my online classes, and during that time, I started to have a passion for practicing my learning skills. While balancing my time in school, I was involved with Titan Catholic from Cal State University Fullerton from Spring 2021-2022, where I grew in my faith with God and other people around me and I participated in their bible studies until I graduated from Cypress College with an Associate in Science Degree in Hospitality Management in Spring 2022. Since then, I’ve been a helping hand to others and I do believe that with my knowledge and other skills, I can incorporate them in any work that comes my way.

Kristine Gonzalez

Preschool Teacher Ms. Kristine

A seasoned teacher who has over 10 years of in-person teaching experience, teaching children ranging from infants to pre-k. I have my B.S. in Child Development and Family Studies and I am also a TESOL certified teacher. My Tagalog lessons are simple and filled with creative hands-on activities tailored for young learners. Classes are themed each week as it makes learning more fun and meaningful to them. I create colorful picture flashcards for my lessons and send a printable version to students to captivate and stimulate their learning experience. Using flashcards is an effective way to introduce concepts that interest them like letters, colors, shapes, numbers, counting, body parts, toys, food, and family, as they develop their Tagalog vocabulary. It is a great memorization tool that can also be utilized to practice and review the weekly vocabulary words at home. I love to incorporate props, puppets, songs, music, and movement to keep the learners engaged and to help them understand the lessons better. I strongly believe that children learn best through play so I will also incorporate interactive games and art into our lessons. Please note that the themed lessons may run longer than a week depending on the learners' level of understanding. During class, children will be encouraged to participate in the discussion actively. Since this is a beginner class, children will not need to speak Tagalog throughout our learning time as I assume they speak little to no Tagalog. They are more than welcome to interact and communicate with me in English. I will teach them the words, phrases, and simple sentences to help them gain confidence in speaking Tagalog. My goal is to make learning fun and instill a lifelong love of learning! Please note that children do not need to know Tagalog to enroll in the class. All children ages 2 to 5 are welcome to join!
