Erich Eberts
Somers, NY

PhD, Biologist, Research Scientist, Teacher, Mentor

Looking for an informal, inexpensive, educational activity this summer? Look no further! Join Erich Eberts, PhD, on a 6 week scientific journey through the topic that excites you most! During my undergrad studies, my research experiences in labs, field courses, and independent studies were what particularly excited me about learning about biology. So, after I graduated, I gained a research fellowship in which I directed individual undergraduate research projects, and developed a study that used thermal cameras to monitor nesting hummingbirds. That led me to do a PhD where I got way more experience working with undergrads in the lab and field while I developed as a scientist myself. Notably, for the past three years, I have worked with a high school student who recently presented her work at a major academic conference, and is currently writing up to be submitted for publication. For a blossoming scientist, I think research is the best way to develop critical thinking and writing skills while exploring your creativity and passions! So, I am excited to offer this informal course to give students a taste of how science helps us understand the world we live in, and to excite them about learning about nature! With my guidance, you will identify a question that genuinely excites you, briefly explore published literature on that topic, design your own study to address a specific hypothesis, perform data collection and statistical analysis, and finally tell your story in a poster presentation, slideshow presentation, and/ or written essay. Research topics are totally up to the student’s interests and what is accessible in their environment. I think independent research project mentoring is the most fulfilling and exciting form of teaching, so I am super excited for this opportunity to introduce young scientists to the basics of biological research in an engaging, tailored, informal, and fun course! Please contact me for more information including a course syllabus!

Kelsey Leach
Litchfield, CT

Certified Science Teacher-13 years strong

Hello! My name is Kelsey and I was born and raised in Connecticut. I attended The University of Connecticut and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in General Science and a a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. I have been a full time science teacher for the past 13 years for middle school and high school, in which time I have taught a variety of subjects, which include Integrated Science, Biology, Forensics, Geology, and Earth Science. I love to go on road trips, hike, bike, fish, swim, go boating, practice my photography, and talk to lots of new people. I especially love learning about how the history of a region is impacted by it's environment and geology. It is always an exciting moment when I look at the world around me and realize how long ago the rocks were created, how old the trees are based on the industry that used to be there and really "see" the landscape for what is and used to be. I especially enjoy tutoring because it allows me to focus in on one student and meet their individual needs. It is exciting to see that spark that students get in their eyes when they finally "get it!" Tutoring allows me to tailor my lessons and activities to the student so they can learn at their fullest potential. It is especially rewarding to have students come back to see me and talk with enthusiasm about a topic or experience in connection to our science lessons, chats, or activities. I am very passionate about students becoming life long learners. They may not love every science topic, but it is important to me that they see the science connection in their every day lives no matter how big or small it may be. I want students to feel that they can accomplish anything they put their minds to and teach them strategies to be successful.

Mohammed Alhaj
Paramus, NJ

PhD in Materials Science & Engineering | Sustainable Materials | Former NSF-GRFP Fellow

With a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering specializing in Polymers from Michigan State University, coupled with a B.S. with High Honors in Materials Science and Engineering from Rutgers University, I bring a deep understanding of the fundamental principles and advanced concepts in this discipline. My work experience at Becton Dickinson (BD) as a Materials Scientist in the Materials Center of Excellence (COE) has honed my skills in materials data analysis, first principles generation, and project management. I have successfully led materials rationalization projects for significant engineering endeavors, resulting in substantial annual impacts on the product portfolio. During my tenure as a Graduate Research Assistant at Michigan State University, I developed innovative approaches for pilot-scale polymer processing of biobased polymers. I was also a teaching assistant for a Polymers & Composites lab, teaching students about the theory and execution of each piece of equipment/characterization technique and how it is used in real-life. These experiences not only expanded my technical capabilities but also enhanced my problem-solving and research skills, which I aim to impart to my students. In summary, students can benefit from my comprehensive academic background, practical industry experience, and passion for advancing sustainable materials engineering practices. I am dedicated to fostering a dynamic learning environment where students can explore the fascinating world of materials science with enthusiasm and depth.
