Music Composer

I have studied Music Theory for the past twelve years. The first six years was shared between middle school and high school when I was in band. My last year of high school I took the AP Music Theory course to expand my knowledge of music even further. I have always loved music since I started in mid-2011, but when I was exposed to the theory behind music, it made me realize that this was the subject that I should pursue as a career. At the end of the school year, I got my AP score of a 5. Having chosen a career path choice, I then went on to study music at Louisiana State University. I choice to dual-major in two different music concentrations, one in composition and the other in a new field, titled Experimental Music & Digital Media. Being that I chose composition as a concentration, I have since utilized and challenged myself to use music theory techniques within my own works. Throughout my undergraduate career I have tutored other colleagues of mine who were struggling with music theory. Ever since then I have been teaching the subject to any individual who needed the guidance. I make a personable approach to the person, see what level they are at, address any discrepancies or questions they have beforehand, and tutor them on a case by case basis. Through repetition and practice, the individuals who have tutored with be in the past have walked away satisfied and confident that they know the material at hand.

Student-centric and versatile multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and recording artist

Why do we have the 12 notes we use in ALL music and how do we use them? With tutoring in Music Theory, the mystery behind these higher concepts of music-making are broken down to the fundamentals and put back together for efficient creativity through the Gentle Release Model and Universal Backwards Design approaches that are incorporated for self-efficacy. My expertise in the field of music and education is wide-ranging and allows for students to set, achieve, and exceed goals quickly. As an experienced recording artist and producer, I've composed and performed in all genres. From Musical Theater to Latin Jazz, Big Band Jazz to Heavy Metal, they all use the 12-note scale and vertical/horizontal grids with instrument-intuitive techniques to compose. Since I am a multi-instrumentalist and advanced music theoretician, helping students work on how the chords, modes, and scales apply to their specific needs and goals is my passion. In education, I have taught any and all kinds of music classes with during and after school programs for grade PreK-high school, as well as professional development for classroom teachers in music integration practices across the US in-person and online. When I continued my own education with a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, it was to focus on online education techniques for all ages. With innovative technologies constantly evolving, I love keeping up with the different hardware and software that allows myself and students to execute amazing music-making no matter where we are!

Tri-Collegiate Adjunct Music Theory and Flute Instructor

Ever since high school, I've enjoyed music theory. I started band on the flute in 6th grade and knew I was going to be a musician. During my junior year of high school, I took the AP Music Theory course. At the end of the year, took the exam, and got a 5 on it; the highest grade you can receive. After that, I knew I wanted to do something with music theory in my future. I attended the University of North Texas for 2 years. Shortly after taking a break, I transferred back home and finished my undergraduate degree in the winter of 2014 at Hardin-Simmons University, double majoring in Flute Performance and Music Theory/Composition. After another short break, I moved to Carbondale, IL where I attended SIUC. I received my master's degree in Flute Performance and Music Theory/Composition in the spring of 2019. My music theory thesis is titled: "The Craft of Music Imagery in Augusta Read Thomas' 'Carillon Sky'." After completing my master's degree, I moved back home and began teaching in the fall of 2019 at HSU. The following semester, spring of 2020, I began teaching flute and music theory at all 3 universities in town. I've taught several music theory courses, ranging in difficulty from freshman-level entry music theory & aural skills to upper-level 16th- and 18th-century counterpoint. Music theory has been my passion for more than 15 years, and I am always eager to share what I love.

Music Theory Professor/Tutor

I have been a professional musician for 15 years now, and a professional composer for 9 years. I studied music theory, advanced music theory, set theory, modernism and modern theory, shinkerian theory, and how music theory reflects music compositions and applications. I studied this in-depth area at Southeast Missouri State University where I received my bachelors in Percussion Performance and Music Composition. I have studied with Dr. Robert Fruewhald, Dr. Jim Daughters, Dr. Shane Mizicko, Dr. Snow, and Dr. Alexander Fragiskatos in terms of composition. For music theory, I have studied with Dr. Timothy Schmidt, Dr. Robert Fruewhald, Dr. Jenna Sehmann, Dr. Michael July, and Dr. Sebastian Buhts. I have attended live music theory seminars and consultations as well as master classes, and I have taught music theory, and still do, from a beginner's level to the most advanced theory can get. I have written musical compositions for orchestra, concert, jazz, funk, chamber, solo, band, and film and media over the span of my career and have had some incredible performances and recognitions across the states of Missouri, Texas, Washington, Ohio, California, Illinois, and Arkansas. I was selected as Master of Music Theory in 2021-2023 from Southeast, and this is a great honor. Not only can I explain and introduce music theory concepts, but I can also apply it in real time for my students, as I already do with my private lesson students. You will not want to miss this opportunity as I have been told I live and breath music, and it shows.
