Microbiologist, Education Access Enthusiast

I am a microbiology consultant at Rum & Sargassum Incorporated. I am a microbial ecologist by training, with special skills in microbiome studies and bioinformatics. As a Ph.D. student at the University of California, San Diego, I served as an Instructional Assistant for three undergraduate-level courses: General Microbiology, Biology of Plagues: Past and Present, and the HMMI SEA-PHAGES Genomics Laboratory which enables students to study bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria). Furthermore, during the summer of 2022, I was hired as the instructor on record for the first two courses. Finally, I was hired as a Visiting Lecturer for General Microbiology at the undergraduate level in the summer of 2023. During my Ph.D. I also took three developmental courses in undergraduate education, each of which primarily focused on inclusive learning strategies for a diverse classroom. I successfully employed these inclusive learning techniques I learned therein to create an inclusive classroom where my students seamlessly engage in active learning in each course that I taught as a teaching assistant or as the lead lecturer. Notably, I transfer my skills from the classroom to the online platform, employing interactive online resources and uniquely crafted activities to create a collaborative classroom and engage the minds of students who are unable to learn in the traditional classroom setting.

Medical and Diagnostic Microbiology Expert

I hold a master’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences (Medical and Diagnostic Microbiology) and previously been involved in student instruction both at tertiary allied health institutions and Universities in Uganda. I have been a tutor of microbiology, Immunology, Mycology and Parasitology at Kagando School of Allied Health Sciences and taught in two universities of Mbarara University of Science and Technology-Tutorial Assistant (60months/Jan, 2012 – 2016) and Kampala International University – Teaching Assistant (60 months/Sept 2017– August 2022). My roles involved, • Preparation of course files and lesson plans for undergraduate students • Teaching, instruction and Supervision of undergraduate students in the field of microbiology (Bacteriology, mycology, general microbiology) and immunology. • Supporting lectures’ lessons by reviewing material with students. • Enforcing University rules to help teach students appropriate behaviour. • Supervision of research projects for undergraduate students • Conducting tutorials with students in the department of Medical laboratory sciences in areas of microbiology, Mycology, Virology and Immunology. I have prior strong hands on microbiology skills having practiced on bench in busy practical settings and hence can relate the practical aspects of microbiology and theory to help a student to appreciate the content. Am currently in Sierra Leone working in a microbiology laboratory on project that is doing capacity building by supporting the in-service laboratory scientific officers on hands-on experience on pathogens identification and antimicrobial sensitivity testing.
