Student-centric and versatile multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and recording artist

What is this crazy instrument where we push down on metal or nylon strings on a slab of wood while the other hand strums one or all of the strings? With tutoring in Guitar, we work on the fundamentals of dexterity in each hand and the position of the body to execute beginning to advanced concepts and put it all together for efficient music-making through the Gentle Release Model and Universal Backwards Design approaches that are incorporated for self-efficacy. My expertise in the field of music and education is wide-ranging and allows for students to set, achieve, and exceed goals quickly. As an experienced recording artist and producer, I've composed and performed in all genres. From Musical Theater to Latin Jazz, Big Band Jazz to Heavy Metal, they all use the 12-note scale and vertical/horizontal grids with instrument-intuitive techniques to compose. Since I am a multi-instrumentalist and advanced music theoretician, helping students learn how to make music through their own bodies and instruments is something I am very passionate about. If I am ever asked what instruments I play, I stick to the main 5 that I play professionally consistently: guitar, bass, piano, flute, and voice. In education, I have taught any and all kinds of music classes with during and after school programs for grade PreK-high school, as well as professional development for classroom teachers in music integration practices across the US in-person and online. I have extensive experience with private lesson instruction and have been consistently tutoring one-on-one for 26 years with the past 5 years being exclusively online. When I continued my own education with a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, it was to focus on online education techniques for all ages. With innovative technologies constantly evolving, I love keeping up with the different hardware and software that allows myself and students to execute amazing music-making no matter where we are!

Learn Exactly What You Wish to Know

*** Lesson Details *** Most students want to play the Guitar to play their favorite songs and I'm the same way. Music is something we carry with us in our hearts and minds. Students will learn what they wish to learn and work at a pace that is comfortable to them. Whether you are a student, “weekend warrior” or a parent whose child has expressed an interest in Guitar anyone can learn all there is to know about Harmony and Theory for the Guitar and how to play their favorite songs. We cover theory in an easy and straightforward no nonsense way in the first half of each lesson and then apply it to the song you wish to learn. This creates an atmosphere where you understand and feel at home with the Guitar. You get an understanding right away and because it is immediately fun it allows you to feel comfortable at any level. Music is fun, and songs are the creative expression of what we feel. Combining theory and the freedom to play and sing songs allows us to express ourselves through music. After 6 months students will have a solid foundation in theory, and a road map of the guitar fretboard enabling them to advance to an intermediate level if they are ready to do so. Students will know enough that music as it relates to the Guitar, which is the world’s most popular instrument in contemporary music, is not a mystery but is a welcome friend. And they will be able to play songs by popular artists and advance at a pace that is satisfying and enjoyable. ---------------------------- Student Comments: What Students Are Saying About ~ James Teaching Style “James’ patience, knowledge and under-standing made learning guitar fun. Professional Guitarist and Instructor

I took up the guitar at the age of 14 after being inspired by my Dad’s incredible finger style guitar playing and quickly developed a love for the instrument. Being addicted to players such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Al Di Meola, Eric Johnson and Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman, Guthrie Govan, Allan Holdsworth and Michael Romeo, I initially focused on rock technique. I have always been obsessed with music and playing guitar. I studied music and the guitar in a variety of styles including jazz, rock and pop, funk, blues, latin and classical. I played throughout high school in the rock band and ensemble performance group and developed a strong repertoire and love for all styles of music. I joined the United State Army Band and at the same time served my country while playing guitar. 20 years of service in the United States Army, I developed an extensive background in music performance and electric guitar instructor and work with various groups and small combos to include private parties, jazz festivals, concerts and special events of all kinds; Concert Band, Rock Band, Dixie Band and latin Band. I also had toured and performed around the world, such places as; the London Beating Retreat Tattoo, Italy Embassy, Bremen Marching Tattoo, Basel, Switzerland, Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland, Soul Arts Center in Soul Korea, Virginia International Tattoo, San Antonio Fiesta parade in San Antonio Texas and The Battle Ship Missouri Memorial, Hawaii. I taught numerous musicians and led thousands of instructional rehearsals to prepare musicians for performances. I'm passionate for the guitar and love to perform and teach.
